While trying to retrieve a deer from a bean field this fall, I found out the hard way that the 4wd on my '74 fj40 was not working. After digging it out, I checked to see if the front drive shaft was turning. It was so I am guessing that it is a problem with hubs. I am getting ready to go through all of the brakes, and want to take care of this while I have it apart. So I am want ting to know if anyone has any Ideas. Should I just go ahead and replace the hubs, or is my problem somewhere else? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My best advice is to tear into it and see what is going on. Lockouts are really pretty simple in operation. When you turn the handle, it moves a gear to lock the wheel to the birfield. Turning it the other way disengages it. It could be gummed up with grease or mud. Before you buy new ones, see what is going on with your originals.

And welcome to mud!!! Post up some pics of your rig!

I will try to get some pictures up. All I have right now is a cell phone pic of the stuck pig. Also, thanks for the advice. I will definately tear into them first. Just seeing if there was a problem that I may have overlooked before getting in there.

Here she is in all of her glory. I have had here about two years now, and I am slowly working on her. Will post more later...have to work in the morning.

Mine did basically the same thing except I wasn't playing in the mud.. Turned out to be the hubs internal springs were not present...

The old grease can gum it up so that it doesn't engage too. It only takes one bad side to spoil the fun.

Thanks guys - when it rolled off of the truck from VA. it was covered in old, dried red clay. So there is a strong possibility that it just needs to be cleaned out. The PO was obviously playing so it may have been ok until I unlocked them when it got here. I will post a new thread with some more pics and her bio. , so everyone can get to know her. By the way, great site!!
