Thought I'd post up some info for all you LJ7x owners out there. In all my experimenting with the 2LTE and LJ78, one of the best upgrades is dumping the pathetic undersized radiator fan for a proper size fan. It makes an immense improvement in cooling. All the 'heavy duty' landcruisers come with decent sized fans. Toyota put a small fan on the Prado, even though the truck weighs just as much as the other cruisers, and the engine works just as hard if not harder. After the first generation cylinder head cracking problem, I'd say this is the #2 design flaw on these trucks. Toyota probably did this to reduce the noise and parasitic draw on the engine. FAIL.

I've tried a few fans and hubs now. The problem with many of the North American gas engine fans is they have the wrong offset. So I had made a spacer on the waterpump to deal with this. This was a PITA and beyond most DIY mechanic's ability to do as it require a lathe to make it. So I found a fan that is an ideal bolt on upgrade. I'm very happy with it, and it is a relatively easy and economical upgrade for everyone out there.

If you guys do this upgrade, please also service the viscous hub at the same time! It makes all the difference. Follow the instructions by the OP in this thread: Blue fan clutch mod

The fan I upgraded to is Toyota part # 16361-17010. It's found on a ton of cruisers out there including all the HZJ7x, PZJ7x, HDJ8x trucks of the early 90s. It's what should have been put in our trucks to begin with. This upgraded fan has the right offset, has eight 'swept' design blades. It's 17.5" in diameter instead of 16.5" (stock Prado fan).

Now, the only thing I can't comment on, is how well this fan fits the upper part of the factory LJ78 fan shroud. Reason being, I had cut that out and riveted a piece of metal there a long time ago during my past fan upgrades. So it is possible this fan will interfere with the upper part of the factory shroud. You can see in my pictures how I modified mine however. Just do the same thing if it's a problem. It might seem the fan clears the upper part of the shroud, but be aware, that when the fan is running hard, the blades pull in toward the radiator a fair amount, and might interfere at that point.

Also, I've run a few 17.5" fans before. I've done a lot of off road driving. The bigger fans have never hit the shroud while the truck is flexing. The frame is very strong on the 70 series and does not seem to flex as much as the older 40 and 60 series frames (I often hear the fans hit on those trucks while we're out wheeling).

I'm using this fan on the LJ78 viscous hub. However, I did get a HDJ81 viscous hub with the fan as well. I may give it a try in the future. I compared the HDJ81 hub to a untouched LJ78 hub, and the HDJ81 hub is a few mm longer (would bring fan closer to rad). The HDJ81 hub is much stiffer though. I'm thinking it might be a superior design inside, or maybe Toyota put better silicone fluid in it. Or perhaps the silicone fluid inside is just newer.

The fan clutch silicone will increase in proportion to the displacement of the engine.

The silicone will be a heavier Cst in a 1HZ/1HD-Xxx engine than in any 4 cylinder diesel. 4 cylinder diesels will have a weight of silicone and a proportional size of fan clutch similar to a 4Runner or a Surf for passenger vehicle applications.

All bets are off when these engine are put into commercial grade vehicles (Dyna, Coaster, Hiace, Etc)

Interesting. Maybe I'll pop the HDJ81 fan clutch on (with out changing anything) and see how it is. It does look like the reservoir is larger on it.

Nice Nick. I have been needing to continue our discussion on that, I just got busy. I will get my hands on one of these fans when I get back from vacation and update on how it works on the unmodified shroud.
Very interested in what kind of results the fan clutch nets.
Swapping mine out to the 10K fluid and dropping the lock up temp certainly made a difference.

Great! Thank you very much for your dedication towards improving the L engine in our Prados

I tried to search from where I could source this fan but most are from outside the EU and quite pricey. I could get a cheaper 2H fan which has part number 16361-68010 and has same outer diameter and looks like it has the same offset, just a different blade design. Thing is I don't want to buy it and then find out it doesnt fit, so I'm gonna have a shot at this again  Is that a factory LJ78 fan you have there ? Could you compare for me the dimensions in the photos I posted on Nas90tdi build thread ? Maybe this way we could have another option for a different part numbered fan.

Yes, it is a factory LJ78 fan I have on the bench. I had to borrow it from a friend as I had tossed mine in the garbage a long time ago. I'll compare the dimensions to the picture you posted, yes. Might be a couple days before I can do, but I'll post back here and let you know. I'm almost certain that it will work fine. Might even fit the stock shroud better as the blades have a bit less depth. As I mentioned above, you might need to modify the top of your shroud the same way I did. It is not hard, but you should be aware that it might be necessary.

Thank you very much Sir. :)

Yep aware of that, I would probably replicate what you did then. I hope you don't mind having a replica engine bay here in Malta :D

Eagerly waiting your next post. I'd love to use the 2H fan and clutch on 2LT-E. That seems like a no-brainer cooling improvement if it fits.

Sorry for the delay. Here are the same measurements as were in your pictures in the other thread. The only thing I'd be concerned about is the diameter. Might be ok, but it is 0.25" larger than even the 1HDT one I'm using.

Perfect! Thank you very much!

I think the guy who did those pictures had his conversion figures wrong. His overall diameter says 44.5cm/17.75inches when in reality 44.5cm converts to 17.5inches. I've looked elsewhere and seems like it's diameter is infact 44.5cm/17.5inches.

Gonna order it now, will keep you guys updated when I have it delivered and installed.

I just ordered mine. $72 with a return guarantee. Here goes!

Pulled my hub yesterday. Will be swapping the oil out and putting my new fan today or tomorrow. We’ll see how it goes!

Right on. Just remember to check that clearance to the top of the shroud! If the blades hit that it might come apart and wreck your radiator. Could become very expensive very fast! The blades definitely pull in toward the radiator when the fan is getting full power, so you need at least a 3/4" clearance there.

Regular threads. #3 screwdriver if you don't have an Asian #3. Give the screwdriver a couple of whacks with a hammer to help free them. Then have a go.
I use my Makita impact driver. But, you have to be extremely careful doing that. Lot's of down force and a gentle trigger until you know it's popped loose.

Alrighty then, So I installed the HZJ7X fan on the lj78 clutch hub. It DOES contact the OEM fan shroud just ever so slightly at the top of the shroud where it slopes toward the front of the vehicle. So, as Nick supposed, some modification will be required. I have to say, that is a whole lot more fan than Original Equipment.
