Aloha I’ve been having problems with my 91 Prado LJ78. A few weeks ago I was teaching my girlfriend how to drive standard, she kept stalling and then the truck just wouldn’t start. No cranking of the engine just one click after full turn of the key. I was still able to “pop the clutch” and it would start and run no problem. Thought it was the starter/solenoid so pulled both off and cleaned thoroughly, truck still won’t start. Now though, it’s not able to start when I pop the clutch. Batteries are fully charged, alternator is new, starter/solenoid clean. I’m really in a pickle here, any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like an electrical issue. Toyota diesels from this era use both a starter relay and a starter solenoid, I’d recommend checking to confirm the relay is functioning properly. If that’s not the problem then you’ve likely got a short or poor connection somewhere. There are wiring diagrams applicable to your model under the Resources section here on Mud; download those and then go through the whole starting system to check both the wiring and the various components.

Lack of starting when rolling and popping the clutch could mean there is something wrong with the engine wiring or ECU. That will be harder to track down, I would recommend pulling the ECU out first, opening it up and checking for leaking capacitors.

Thank you! Will give both a shot.
