I'm so far very happy with the herculiner I rolled on. Prep is the key... and when you think you have it done, do it all one more time. Prep, prep, and prep some more.

I too used herculiner in my 40. That was 8 years ago and it still looks great. I agree, preperation is the key to success......

It is good to hear that the herculiner has worked well for some of you. My plan is to herculiner the outside bottom of the tub and the inside sort of like aksnowryder pic. Good to know it works well and last...

I used the Herculiner a few years back and it was fine. The surface prep is key but the finish is very rough. It was tough to clean the crap off the herculiner.
I have Linex on the interior of a 55 and it is much smoother. I can actually clean it up without shredding a paper towel. Not that it needs to be cleaned like that, it is just to stress the point. If you want the protection and a rough surface, go with the roll on Herculiner kit. Otherwise bute the bullet and get the Linex sprayed on.
my 2 cents..

Herc +

When I use Herculiner, I usually go over it with a coat of the Duplicolor liner to smooth it out. It looks much better than straight Herc too.

im gonna rhino line mine. they guarantee the stuff for life for peeling or whatnot. that way its on them if it happens down the road. i used that duplicolor s*** from the autoparts store in my ford cab, and it sucks. i used to spray these in when i was younger, so prep was done correctly. it just is a suck material.

Cirbo: Is that the green FJ40 you were restoring for your buddy last year, or have you already started on another FJ40 project?

FJ40ER: Here's pics of my FJ40 with RhinoLiner applied to an Aqualu tub. The aluminum tub really needs it as it conducts heat more efficiently than steel (read: hot interior) and every little pebble/stone your tire throws makes it "ping". For a professional spray application (with you doing all of the self-etching primer prep work), expect to pay in the $500-$600 range. This stuff is applied so thick, it acts as an insulator and you'd be hard pressed to dimple the metal in the floor if you dropped something heavy on it. I've used the Autozone applied stuff and unless you do like Colorado Boy and apply it real thick with an air gun, you aren't doing anything more than applying a thin top coat to dress-up the interior.

The very same rig. On advice of a (former) friend:flipoff2:, I gave the paint and prep to a shop that ended up taking me for some cash and about 4 months of my time. I had to reclaim all parts and restart the project from square 1. She is finally just about ready for paint and final assembly.

Line-X ain't cheap, and this tub was epoxy etch-primed, and done completely inside and out, top and bottom. :meh:

Finally got around to taking a few pictures of my Cruiser. It is pretty dirty, but you can see the Line-X lining in these two pictures.

I did the whole inside of mine with a couple coats of Duplicolor bedliner. It looks and bonds good.

just added herculiner yesterday

here is my 76 pile of parts that is coming back together after 2 months of welding and cutting. I did the front half of tub a couple months ago so it is covered with dust, that is why it is a different color in a couple pictures. Definitely prep is the key, rough up the surface and then clean it thoroughly. I think it would be a good idea to go over it to make it a little smoother for ease of cleaning... did not think of that till after. Oops.
Anyway, I did 2 coats on the rockers, the whole interior tub and under a new set of front fenders- cost about 95 bucks plus about a weekend of my time.

Hey Stephen-I bought this this truck from my cousin back in 2011. I’d love to learn about some of the things you did in your resto of it.
