Hey Rob,
Thanks for reviving this old thread. I just re-read all 5 pages earlier this morning. Sent me on quite a nostalgia trip. I'll never forget the cannonball run across B.C.-Washington-Idaho-Montana-North Dakota-Minnesota-WI-and the UP. That road trip had it all, beginning with being hassled for 45 minutes by a Barney Fife border guard who couldn't seem to understand why a Texan was picking up a Washington truck in Canada that belonged to another guy in Michigan. He was convinced that I'd stolen the 40 and got very pi$$ed when he couldn't poke holes in my story. Then there was the sidewall blowout during a monsoon rain storm followed shortly thereafter by battery and alternator failure., which left me stranded in Bumfawk, WA for 3 days while waiting for tires and a new alternator from Cruiser Dan. Fortunately there was a little Irish pub across the street from my flea-bag hotel. And did I mention the Winter storm that hit without warning while driving through Snoqualmie Pass? Heavy snow, almost zero visibility and no place to pull over so I just followed the tail lights of a fearless 18 wheeler. Montana highway closures due to high cross-winds made for some interesting detours but I was still able to make a stop in Missoula and snare about 6 cases of Moose Drool. (Somewhere in Sean's Cruiser photo archives there's a shot of the 40 at the end of the run, chock full of primo beer). And finally, there was the all-night drive from Fargo to Marquette, cutting a swath across rural Minnesota on winding country roads in pitch darkness. John has it right--I must be nuts.
Rob, I'm very disappointed that we never got around to hooking up at the Longwood. I'll do a better job of budgeting time on the next trip to Nanaimo, which hopefully will be next Spring. I'm thinking I should drive my 40 up there. Heck, it's only ~2700 miles, and it's not like I haven't done it before.
Still crazy after all these beers, er, I mean years,
Lee
