i’ve been trying to research this a little bit is there a “non-80 series” steering wheel from another lexus model i can buy used for my lx450?
i’m going to have to do the leather at some point and i see my horn is intermittent so i need to take it apart and clean a clock spring i guess.

Been researching the same. I have a wheel from a 98ish ES300, which is smaller in diameter but I think fits the splines. The airbag though is different (smaller), so you’d need to pick up that as well.

I have a 97 LC, which means that the Lexus airbag cover would have the wrong logo, but not a problem obviously for your situation. Realizing this I picked up a Camry airbag that fits the wheel, but the yellow electrical connector is different on the 80. IIRC the ES300 airbag connector was the same as the one in the 80, however.

You’re welcome to the wheel for shipping, it’s in good condition, gray leather.

i’ll message you on the wheel. THANK YOU for the offer.
ES300 seems like what i remember seeing so maybe it was your homework i was looking at. but even looking over your shoulder it is sort of hard to follow.
late 90’s ES300 has similar wheel but slightly smaller than LX/LC. and LX/LC airbags (which are identical i guess?) won’t fit the LS wheel? so you also need to but the LS airbag when you get the wheel to do the swap?

Right, one small correction, ES wheel and airbag is smaller than LS/LX, so your origin airbag won’t fit. BUT you can get an ES airbag on eBay or a junkyard if one’s close and will sell you one (they don’t in CA). Just make sure the connector fits your LX.

s***. i’m confused and we haven’t even gotten to cruise control (or telephone controls?).

there is an LC steering wheel and airbag and one or both connect into the harness?

then there is an LX steering wheel and airbag? or the airbag on the LX just has a different (non-removeable?) cover? also LX wheel is it maybe isn’t different than LC?

then there is a LS steering wheel and airbag combo that is a close replacement (it has the lexus logo)?

what was the point about the camry? it has a similar airbag to the LC but the connector for is different?

also do the horn contacts come with either of these parts?

THANKS

Land Cruiser / LX450 are the same, with the only difference being the L logo on the airbag cover instead of the sombrero T.

The LS400 steering wheel (big sedan) is the same as the Land Cruiser / LX450 - same size and same airbag. Problem is, these suffer the same issues as the ones on our rigs, the leather gets all destroyed. I have yet to see one in better shape than the semi-wrecked one in my LC. If you find one of these, it should be plug and play with your stock OEM LX450 airbag. Plus, from what I’ve read the wood / leather wheels (some have phone controls) from the LS do NOT work with our rigs.

Point on the Camry was that it physically fits in the space on the ES300 steering wheel, and has the proper logo (I am anal about these things), but the airbag connector doesn’t work with my Land Cruiser. The ES300 airbag, however, does have the same connector as the Land Cruiser AND of course it fits in the space on the ES300 wheel, it just has the L on the cover. Which bugs.

Horn contacts I believe are built into the wheel, pressing the airbag completes the circuit and the horn sounds.

I bought a used LC wheel for my LX450 from @arcteryx. He shipped it out to Dallas Custom on my behalf.
The horn contacts are under the airbag, BTW. You're not cleaning the clock spring.

Here's my original thread:

i see.
1. contacts for horn are in the wheel itself and nothing to do with the airbag?
2. LX and LC wheels are identical. LX and LC airbags can be swapped around.
3. ES300 is identical to LX and also to LC but with different logo?
4. LS300 looks good but doesn’t fit?
5. camry airbag fits the LX and LC (and obviously has the toyota logo?

what was the point about the wood? i do get the ES has heavy wear so the leather is rarely good but was there a wood wheel?

The FSM references "steering wheel pad". That is the airbag module. It is a self contained removable unit that mounts to the spring loaded horn contacts on the frame of the wheel. If you look at the first picture I posted in the thread I referenced, you will see the horn contacts.

thanks JH. so i guess i just crack the FSM and disconnect the battery and remove the airbag and replace one part?
the thread i linked seemed to imply this was not an easy DIY for airbag models?

3 - ES300 is smaller than LX / LC, has a Lexus “L” rather than T (natch)
4 - LS400 DOES fit, same as LX / LC but gets wrecked too
5 - Camry airbag fits the ES300. ES300 is a re-badged Camry.

Point on the wood wheel - there are LS400 wheels out there that are a combo wood / leather which look great, but from what I’ve read do not work with the 80.

thanks. the multi-factorial variables always do me in.
so for one to one replacement you can find a LS400 wheel and keep your airbag?

Before I would replace parts I would try to figure out what the problem is.

yeah thanks. i need to check the terminals at the horn. it worked when i had to use it this morning.
i also need to do something about the steering wrap though so i a was sort of trying to put together a strategy for both of these if the horn is not just contacts.
off the top of my head i guess i could get an old crappy LS 400 wheel, buy a wrap, drop it off at the leather upholstery repair place, but the horn contact part and pull my steering wheel when i get the new steering wheel back?
does that sound like a plan?!

ONE THING i am not sure if is if the LS400 wheel has the phone control parts attached to it or if i just keep these and screw then into the new wheel or something.

Depends on how much money you want to spend and what results you expect.
I wanted the OEM look with an improved feel, and that's exactly what I got. However, DCSW will do anything you want and all the options are a-la-carte.
Phone/audio controls were never a thought. I have a good hands free Bluetooth setup.

sorry. dcsw is a shop?
i have the controls pictured. i’m trying to just figure an economical strategy to redo the wrap. but the horn is not working well either.
so i want to keep it OEM and if LS400 is sane wheel i can buy one of those and remove my airbag and put in some part for the horn i think. or rewrap the new to me one?
also, what was the deal about me not cleaning the clock spring?

You didn't read the thread I posted. DCSW is Dallas Custom Steering Wheel. It's what they do.
The clock spring is a sealed unit IIRC. You're not going to clean it.
If the horn is the only issue, then I would look at the circuit. It's a fuse, a relay, and a switch that honks the horn units. You should be able to find the issue rather quickly.
