hello all,

Currently looking for a 1995-1997 LHD HDJ80 with the 1HD-FT. Please get in touch if you have one for sale or if you are someone (or know someone) who is familiar with importing good condition examples from European countries to Canada.

I figured I would at least look into LHD options before settling on a time machine HDJ81 example from Japan

Thanks guys

Good luck considering the 25 year law, best you could legally hope for is a 92 year model in 2017.

Are you located in Canada? If so, your model year range won't be a problem. We in the US are the only ones stuck with the 25 year rule.

If you're in Canada, I will gladly bring one in for you. PM me if you're interested. If you're in the US, the newest I can get you is a 1992 with 1HD-T, but LHD is no problem.

Hi mate. I'm in Canada. Everyone here advises to bring one from Japan as its like stepping in a time machine if you get a good one from a guy on the ground there. Lot of people say to use Brave Auto in that cAse.

I figured I'd look into LHD HDJ80's but I've noticed a few things

- Spain has really inflated prices. Some great condition but mileage is pretty high

- France. same, but seem more abused and even higher mileage!

I'm still open to it. The reason I am hesitant to bring one from Japan is I see lots of locals with jdms getting harassed. Also, I may end up spending a good portion of the year on Japan in 2018 onward and I might just get an hdj81 while I'm there anyway.

I'll PM you! Thanks to all for the insight and assistance.

Definitely work with @mudandrock if you want one. He's the most honest, easy to talk to, straight shooter ive met so far in this "industry". Knows the good sources of where to get them and is very familiar with Canada. Good luck! I hope you get one that makes us americans jealous.

Just curious though.... when you say locals get "harassed" that have jdm cruisers, what do you mean? Harassed by other locals or by law enforcement?

Thanks for the heads up. My thinking is I will get an LHD for here, whole family can use, and even when I'm in Japan for a good part of the year I can get an hdj81 for my time there. Wouldn't that be a dream eh?

Regards harassment, it seems local authorities really clamp down on stopping and inspecting. Hypothetically, even if you have swapped headlights to point the right way, have the right seat belts for local approval etc etc....does one really have time for potential headaches?

If you're going to work in Japan, you can get a 2006 that is exempt from their DEF emissions laws (much cheaper), and legally import it back into Canada after a year, side-stepping the 15 year rule. Something to consider.

I didn't realize that was possible. Hmm. I never heard this. I'm assuming you or someone you know pulled this off without a problem up in Canada?

Hmm. That wouldn't be a bad way to get a 2007 70 series up here in the future.

I could find zero documentation to support this, so I'm not sure if this is some amazing loophole no oNE knows about. It seems pretty clear cut that if a Canadian plans to bring a vehicle in permanently from any country other than the states, it has to be 15 years old. If anyone can provide some insight on this, I'm sure Canadian members would be very interested to hear it!

I too have spent quite a bit of time on transportation Canada's website and never seen anything to this effect, other than temporary Imports for less than a year, then it has to leave Canada. Perhaps you should send @SHREDwagon a PM because I too am very curious where this exemption exists in the import process. Canada has way more loopholes than the US does when it comes to imports, but still you gotta know for sure you can jump through said loophole before you spend all that $ on a cruiser.

Hey Guys - If one works overseas for 365 days as an expat, from what I've been told, yes, you can import a vehicle purchased less than 15 years. I have personally not done this and do not know the restrictions, if any, but have been told by numerous people who have worked over yonder. The best place to verify this would be to call Customs Canada.

I am not even looking at one newer than 97 but just out of sheer curiosity I must check into it! Thanks for the heads up shred wagon
