my 86 is leaking gas right out of the filler neck. its like it dosent want to be there and comes out where you put it in. it only happens if its over half full. now the cap dosent seal the hole way because one of the threads are bent in. would this be the problem? or am i looking at something more indebth?..

thanks for any help.

Have you had your gas tank replaced under recall?

Aside from an obviously worn/incorrect fuel cap, it could be from pressure build up

Toyota has a recall on the tanks for pressure build up. Check your local dealer and give them your vin#. If that is the problem, and your tank has not already been replaced, the recall is still valid, despite what some dealers have suggested, as it is a safety recall.

My 60 would stink like gas every time i would make tight turns. then I realized that the gas cap did not seal well. I would turn it a little too much and one side would pop out of the thread. So now, I only turn it till it is snug and stop right before one side would pop off of the thread and now I have a smell free interior even while cornering like a Porshe.

i called 2 dealerships and they both said the recall was done.
i really dont know where to go and look to figure out how to fix this problem. its really annoying only being able to fill up half way. any suggestions?

The problem is that bent in thread/sheet metal thingy. It is impossible to fix. Years of mashing the fuel filler in there mash the lower one in and prevent it from sealing right. I had the exact problem.

There is a good fix available-a new filler neck from Toyota. It isn't cheap (I seem to remember $150 or so) but it's a piece of art when new and in your hand. Install and be happy. I would order the large rubber hose from the neck to the tank as well.

Since then, I hold the fuel nozzle myself and don't simply mash it into the filler neck.

I had a similar problem. Mine also spilled into the inside. I have a bent lip as well but haven't replaced the gas fill neck yet. I did get a new gas cap, new hose that runs from the fill neck to the tank, and a couple gaskets associated with the fill neck. I haven't had a problem since.

thanks for the help. il have to order a new filler neck as soon as i get the cash.
