Thanks Markuson. I opted for the UV-82 kit. I have avoided getting into the comms world because I know deep down that it is yet another black hole that me and my money will disappear into.

First it's just a $90 handheld and next thing you know, I am a few thousand dollars poorer and sitting in my basement trying to have a conversation with some dude sitting in his basement somewhere in Wales - all just so I can monitor you guys for two days

We use these in our Champcar (crap can racing) and they are a bit tricky to program. There is a few good youtube videos that make the instructions much more clear. I would suggest looking one of those up.

It'll take a little study of the user manual, but generally you "set it and forget it."

I'd also suggest studying and taking your ham radio license. The Technician (Level 1) license is fairly easy to prep for if you use the hamstudy.org study app. The actual exam is only 35 questions and only takes about 15mins to work through. I just took and passed my exam this Sunday. Monday morning I had my FCC license and radio call sign.

I raced Chump for about 5 years. My avatard [ <-- ] is my race team logo. Hundreds of hours at VIR. Here is some Pucker Factor 9000 from Daytona a few years back:


I'm just using some cheap Baoefang UV-5R's. Programmed with CHIRP. I do have my GRMS/FRS licence, but haven't done the HAM yet. I'll program in the HAM freq's so I can listen in. I'm bringing some extras just in case anyone needs one.

I’ve heard restaurants will be hard to get into in Ouray and overall in the area. Do restaurants there generally take reservations?

Where are you hearing this?

Are there reports of some new factor leading to this? In the numerous times/LCDCs we’ve been, it wasn’t unusually difficult.

Barring some new facgor…expect it to be busy with wait times on par with other popular places at peak times.

Restaurants are short staffed and some have limited hours due to the shortage. This is all across Colorado but mountain towns hit harder. My favorite place in telluride brown dog pizza doesn’t open until 3pm. So no lunch options.

It came up in just general google searches on restaurants. Several restaurants said staff shortages had forced limited hours combined with higher than normal tourist traffic.

Ya, good point & not unique to Ouray. Restaurants nationwide are in the same pickle struggling to get workers to return. Definitely true here in CA… Brown Dog definitely= best spot of all… Who knows… Here’s hoping they ramp back up soon.

As with last year, we defer to the local authorities and ask that everyone be aware of and follow their guidelines. We're not making any formal requests of attendees to as we're definitely not experts on health matters.

As a reference point, my wife and I are both vaccinated and likely will not be wearing masks during the event's outdoor activities. That said, we'll have them on hand in case we encounter a business that requires them or are in a situation where those around us prefer that masks are on. This is what we're currently used to around our neighborhood.

I live in Crested Butte. It's a s***show here. Be prepared to wait up to an hour for a table, then up to an hour for your food. Staff will be stressed out, your food may not be the best (it might be somewhat cold.) Overall: don't go to dinner hungry if you can help it, have an open mind and be patient. A lot of your servers are probably commuting from Montrose or living in a tent.
