I was looking for a LC to replace my aging Sequoia '01.
I found one offered by local dealer. However, it is a manual (I dont mind that a bit) and it is a diesel 4.5 L engine. But it is BRAND new. 0 Km!!

Now I am in dilemma of weather I should buy that one or stick to the usual Petrol (Gas) V6 or V8. But have to pay lots more in price even for a used one (around 8-15 thousand $, depending which trim I go with).

My question to you guys, and I know the experience with LC 200 with diesel engines is limited to Australia and Europe, is that a good engine to go with. Is it smooth enough for daily use?
Is acceleration at least acceptable for such SUVs?
And what about maintenance? is it doable and straight forward with same intervals and cost?

I live in Middle east nowadays and hence I can have this option.

Your input is appreciated and anticipated.

thanks in advance.......

the good thing it's Toyota it's pushing around the world just 2 new model of V8 TDI engines .. 1VD-FTV and 2VD-FTV .. while you will have the fisr one in the 200 series which it's a 4.5 V8 TDI twin turbo .. that works ok for that application ...

What part of the middle east are you in? The biggest problem with the 4.5L diesels is the quality of fuel you have to use here. You would think being in the middle east where the fuel comes from we could atleast get decent quality but thats not always the case.

Also unlike in the US where a diesel engine will cost you $4-6k more - Toyota the diesel is normally cheaper.

Being a manual its either going to be a G9 spec(did it have vinyl floor or carprt) or a GX/GXR lower option based on the country you in.

This to remember is diesel its all about PM and not repair cost. But Diesel here (in UAE) is sometimes 3x4 times more money per liter. So operating cost is stupid.

sir..my grandpas 200 is the same as what you are talkin..
what i can say with it is they are very fast..they can top 200kph easily..
we're in the Philippines by the way and the middle east spec diesel 200 series is also available here.
they only differ in accesories..

I am in Saudi Arabia ...
Diesel is cheaper than Gas.
I am a cautious driver generally, ie keep my preventive maintenance upto mark. Though not as vigorously as the dealer would like to, but in ball park as recommended by the manufacturers. So I would try PM be as scheduled.

Your comments (and others as well), are at least not so discouraging as I have got from my immediate surroundings. People here tell me why bother with this diesel and go for a gas -even though I would need to pay 15-20% extra-. Their point, gas is cheap and resale for gas is easy (vs imposible for diesel- as buyers are usually expats who would eventually take to their countries eg Yemen, Sudan ..etc).
I am still plannig to buy the diesel. Will let you guys know what ever I decide in next couple of days.

Thank you sir for your reply.
It has been helpful.

I would get a 5.7 LC. The 5.7 absolutely blows away the 4.5 diesel in every category except MPG

And the cost of parts - here the 5.7 as only no been released - so no one stocks the parts. So if your in a rush you have to purchase the lexus LX570 which tends to be more $ even though its still comes in a toyota box. We dont have "MSPR" the same way that most countries have so its all supply and demand.

5.7 in LC form is available in the UAE.

I meant to say "only now been release" But if you have a chance to get it at a good price go for it - TLC in the middle east have already started to go up in price (avg of 15K AED) and we are expecting a dry spell for over a month and 1/2 as a number of GCC importers have been told to expect a 2 month delay.

We normally buy 110-120 TLC's a month and we are having major issues keeping up our supplies - so we have been buying up all we can find - even GX's from Saudi

also the lx570 which has been on sale in the middle east since early 2008 has the 5.7 , so parts are no problem at all , seriously if you can afford a 5.7 , then go ahead and get it !

There are no issues with parts. End of story!

In the United States, if one needed a Land Cruiser part for the 200, if it wasn't in the warehouse, then it would come from Japan. Unless it was one of the few parts that is made in North America, then it would come from NA.

Land Cruisers part are usually difficult parts to get wherever you live. The dealer will put out a parts order, and then it will arrive. It is common for 80 series models to have 2 weeks waits for parts that come from Japan.

As for the 5.7, the same engine is used in the Tundra/Sequioa/LC/LX570. While the Land Crusier/LX engines are made in Japan, the Tundra/Sequipa are made in North America.

I wouldn't worry about parts availablity.

Well in my line of work - I modify over 90+ TLC's a month and I only have 6 days from when they come in to roll them out fully armored. So if there is ever an issue with a part being damaged I'm basically screwed.

Also I don't have alot of confidence in the dealership here either with 5.7 issues (computer and electrical) but maybe Saudi has better luck.

In your case, get the Land Cruisers with the 4.7 , that is the engine you want to be using.

There is over 13 years of service for that engine. Parts, used and refurbished will be a plenty

thank you all for the input....
But I think every one is telling to get the 5.7.
However, I am getting the "Diesel 4.5 V8" for HALF the price of 5.7 through the dealer. With 3 year or 100000 km warranty.
Now, is this a good deal?
Is there a market for second hand "Diesel" LC, if I need to sell it down the road -say 3 -5 years from now-?

That is the question in my mind....
Other wise I can spend 10000SAR extra and get 4.5 L TLC.

In my opinion and by experience, Toyota's current diesel engines are fine -80s & 90s- 2.4 and 3 L were somewhat troublesome where I live and this could have been due to low quality fuel.
I have tried an LC 80 diesel and the performance compared to gas was amazing, plenty power.
If you go diesel and to be on the safe side I would recommend, dependent on type of use:
A) more often than recommended preventive maintenance and service.
B) if compatible insure that Toyota installs an Algae-X:
http://www.algae-x.net/products/fuel-conditioners/lg-x-series-fuel-conditioners
They work and here come pre-installed either by dealer or manufacturer but on smaller engines, no LC200 diesel here.

Good luck.
