Hello There

Hello there

Trying to know if my 1999 LC 100 has LSD or not.

- Jacked the car, put in neutral and tried to rotate one tyre. The other tyre did not move b/c it is a 4wd all time.

- On the plate where vin # tans/axle details are =>

Have the following:

Trans/Axle: A442F A04B

Did some searches 4 means 4.56R&P
LC ENGINEERING Differential Tech
A means two pinion open Diff.

Can someone help with above and let me know what letter would mean if there is an LSD or not ?

Thank you

Jack up the rear axle, engage gearbox, turn one wheel , if the opposite wheel goes the same way then it is LSD. If the opposite wheel goes the other direction then it is Open diff.

Edit:
Apparently I was all sorts of wrong. My 98 US LX has your same door tag, A04B, the rear is labeled LSD and I thought all 98-02 US trucks were 4.30 geared.

Original:

Get in some dirt and lay into it.

You are right, the second A would mean 2 pinion open, not LSD.

First digit: A=7.5" ring gear
Second/third: 04=4.56 ratio
Fourth: B=4 pinion Open=not LSD

Alternative fourth: C=2 pinion LSD

PS. Where are you and where is the truck from?

He shouldn't have a LSD (from the factory) in his Land Cruiser. In 98-99 a rear 'locker' was available as an option.

If an LX470 (98-99) then yes, they all came with a LSD (U.S. Market).

Now, that's not to say someone didn't put a LSD in the rear...but it didn't come from the factory that way (Land Cruiser) to the best of my knowledge.

^^^If the OP has a A442F transmission, then it is not a North American spec 100.

Hi There

Truck is overseas in Lebanon. We bought it used..... not sure if it came used from US or GCC spec.

This LC 100 has strangely an AHC system.

Does the axle A04B => Seems B stands for 4 pinion open diff.

see below :
"
FIRST DIGIT
A= 7.5"
B= 8.0"

2ND & 3RD DIGIT
01= 3.583
02= 3.727
03= 4.100
04= 4.556 OR 4.300
05= 4.700
06= 4.875 OR 3.909

4TH DIGIT
A= 2
B= 4
C= 2 pinion OEM limited slip "

Can someone confirm above ?

No sticker is on m diff probably done from old age.

On the test to do....keeping the gearbox in " N" and turning the tyre is not causing other tyre to turn.

But it will cause the drive shaft to rotate. You need to stop drive shaft from turning then turn one wheel. see which way the other wheel turns.

OK if not US spec....it could have anything in it.

But Toyota would use one universal code for axle ratio....

Is letter "C" ending means LSD ?

Can't say definitively what Toyota used for Axle Codes. My '99 LX470 has 4.30 gears is LSD and has a code of A04B

So to know I would jack up the rear end , put the gear in N and rotate tyres by hand to see if they rotate in same or opposite direction.

Should I engage diff lock.....last time I tried only one tyre rotated....

If you lock your diff the axles are locked as one unit and both wheels will rotate in the same direction.

If the vehicle is drive-able....I'd just find a place with a soft surface and 'floor it'. IF you have a (working) LSD you'll have your answer (both tires will spin).

Hey

Was able to find that " LSD Oil" sticker on the rear diff....so I have an LSD despite axle code being A04B.

Looking to change oil in the diffs:
Found Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75W-140 => Is this OK or 80W90 needed for limited slip ?

Also truck diff gear oil has never been changed. I am running 285 75 16 BFG KO2( older model date 2008 but still OK)....on deceleration I do hear slight hum/wind noise.... could this be from the tyres ?

Some people reported diff noise after gear oil change => Any opinions ?
