Thanks guys.

Just heard back from Luke at 4x4 labs. The main shell was finished on Friday and they are starting on the swingouts and tire carrier today.

I have seen some people offset their license plate to the side in order to not be obstructed by the tire. How are they doing this? I had thought of using a bar of aluminum mounted in the stock position and extending over to the passenger side, this could hold the plate. This doesn't look like how others are doing it.

Any ideas?

I think you are on the right track....
exactly the right track actually

I would add only...bend it so you have room for back hardware

The 4x4 labs rear bumper is on!

Cutting through the frame on both sides was no problem, all the other attachment point were a problem, haha. A lot of cutoff wheel action was needed.

Grinded down any rusts spots and then cleaned everything with marine clean, then hit it with some metal ready, then coated everything with 2 coats of POR-15.

Went home, napped, met Hodges up there at the shop to install the bumper.
Install went alright but i do have some issues.
-One of the 12mm weldnuts is stripped so i need to fix that. Probably gonna run a 1/2-20 tap and get a grade 8 SAE bolt rather than going to a 14mm sized bolt and having to possibly enlarge the whole on the bumper, also not sure if the weld nut is big enough to drill/tap to a 14mm.

-The tire swingout holder piece sits too close to the tailgate to mount the hi-lift on. The mount for the hi-lift sits too close that is. If the mount wasn't there i am sure it'd be fine.

-The way the holder mounts to the vertical section is with two bolts that clamp it in place. The bolt holes are not high enough to get bolts through. I could take a file to this section.

I just emailed Luke at 4x4 labs about these issues and will be waiting to hear back from him on how to proceed.

My only guess is that the vertical section of the tire carrier is not slanted away far enough or it wasn't built to also accept the hi-lift holder as well.

I got kinda mad about the tire not being able to put on and the bolts not lining up, haha, so i didn't feel like taking out the camera.

Here are some though.
These are just iphone pics, the real pics are on my DSLR and i won't have those up for a few days.

You can see how i have the exhaust re-routed as well. I got a little painting crazy and also POR-15'ed the exhaust tip. Not sure why the pictures got rotated sideways.

Sorry to hear about those issues, usually only hear good things. I like these bumpers but im cheap!!!

It looks like your upright for the spare tire sits much closer to the tailgate than mine. I'll try to get some pics taken tomorrow and post them for reference.

The two bolts holding the spare tire attachment were a pain to drive through on mine as well, the powder coat was too thick making the fit too tight. I drove mine in place with a hammer and just barely threaded them through.

Here is a pic of my tire carrier. The angle of the carrier away from the truck is different than yours. Look how far the top is away from my door.

Thanks for the pic pbnfj.

Just heard back from Luke at 4x4 Labs.

The upright section i received was for the tire carrier without a hi-lift mount. The one for the hi-lift mount is at more of an angle to allow room for the hi-lift jack. I thought this as well because in the pictures the tire on the mount was vertical. On mine, if i were to mount the tire the tire would be at a big angle. So the additional angle of the upright would make the tire sit more vertical.

Luke said he is going to ship me the correct upright right away.

The dogs out at the camp. I love these dogs.

Roux likes to sit on steps, she's silly.

Still waiting on the correct upright for the rear swing out. I checked the angle on the upright and Luke told me that the one with-out the hi-lift holder should be right at 78* w.r.t. horizontal and the hi-lift upright should be 72* w.r.t. horizontal. Sure enough, my protractor measured mine at roughly 80*. New one should be here in a few days. Hopefully Luke will offer me a slight discount on the can holder, but who knows.

Here are some pics of the surgery and install.

Dogs being helpful as usual. This is actually after about a couple hours of playing ball and Roux "flirting" with Beau. And by flirting i mean biting his feet and ears and jumping on him.

CUT!

Grinded down the welds and removed some paint. After this i cleaned and coated everything in POR-15, went home and napped and let the paint cure for about 6 hours or so with a fan blowing.

Nice write up Layton I'm just running across this, hopefully one of these days we'll get to cross paths and I'll get to see it in person. Don't see alot of the Dark Blue 80's around and yours looks great.

Don't worry Larry. I keep pushing him to come to SI with us. He said he may make it out there for one of our work weekends now that he knows we will clear the trails to fit his rig. Although, last I talked to him he said something about selling this rig and getting a 100 / LX470. :hmm:

Well I hope he does you know I knock down most of the brush when I go in there I'll keep it clean of the trail rash don't want it to look like mine. Cole's 100 would have been a good one to jump on, either way he won't have an issues selling this one. I know someone with a 100 that maybe interested in that deal ;)

If you guys know some folks interested in an 80, let me know. :)
I may part out the ARB front and 4xInnovation rock rails also, but that would be about it.

Also, if you know someone with a 100 (preferably 99-01)

Recent pics from the other day, also some good shots of the new bumper

looks good!!

Nice looking rig.

Bit OT but you couldn't post up the extended and compressed lengths of the gas struts on your rear bumper swingout carriers could you?
