After my FJ60 again failed a smog pre-test, and the mechanic called me to ask if I had an engine manual to help him figure it out, I called Gary Kardum at Mudrak. Gary said that sometimes the PS unit will leak oil onto the O2 pump and the pump will fail. This sounds about as plausible as anything I have heard, and I am taking the vehicle to him next week to drill down on the problem.

Anyone else seen a instance of this problem??? ???

Extremely common; however, the air pump normally freezes up and screeches, so you'll know when it happens.

I've heard some intermittant screeching at speed, sounds a little like a slipping belt. Could this be what I am hearing??
