I have a 1981 FJ40 with the pull type glove box (Jan 1981 to be exact).

I've seen many late model trucks that have a round twist knob instead of the pull to open "pocket" tab.

Does anyone know when the change happened?

I'm attaching a picture of a late model glovebox. Would like to see pictures of what you've got including the inside where the catch latches. Thanks!

I've never seen the twist knob before. Mine is a pull to open, and is all I've ever seen here in the states.

Interesting yours doesn't have one. Believe US market it changed in 8/80. Also should have split transfer case, hand brake on the rear axle, two piece steering shaft, rear heater under the center console if it has one. Steering wheel should have the words Land Cruiser in a plastic emblem.

Yes to all except the glovebox

Have you looked to see if tab is there where the catch bolts too? The earlier style with fit as the opening didn't change, just a tab added. Could have a PO switched it.

Do you have any pictures of this?

Quite true that it is market-dependant.

For most markets the same type of knob persisted: 55521-90300 KNOB, GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR

But for the USA market they got 55560-12020 BUTTON SUB-ASSY. GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR LOCK from Aug 1980 onwards

I don't think it was a year change it was market dependant, we never got gloveboxes with twist knobs all ours were pull to open

I'm also looking for this twist knob or suitable replacement. Any suggestions?

latter models(with the knob on the glove box) of the 40 can use a fj62 lock, just swap it out.
are all year doors the same? can you swap the doors out?
Unfortunately I can't remember nor did I keep the receipt in my file.

But I'm sure it was purchased at a big box hardware store like Menards.
Hi- I like to do the same for my glove box door. Do you recall the brand and model of the cam lock you used? Many thanks!
