Land Cruiser vs Range Rover

A 2009 RRS I just finished. @TonyP saw this rig and heard my rant on this mongrel...

Not one thing was symmetrical from DS to PS. The front center tow loop was even welded .875" off center. I checked 3 others and they were all over the board for centered to 1.125" off.

Yup, the sliders looked very cool but you could clearly see the offset asymmetrical fastener holes on the skids that just looked off.

RRs look great but I wouldn't own one. They certainly have personality but I don't want a car with personality to depend on when I'm in the middle of nowhere. If you own a RR, and wheel your rig, invest in a satellite phone.

As for my LR4, I had no issues in the first 2 years. At all. Well, other than breaking the bumper loose on the Turret Arch trail in Arches NP. But that was all on me. Air suspension worked great. (By the 2014 MY the LR4 had a pretty robust system.) That said, even with the extended warranty, I was feeling antsy when it hit 55K after 2 years. Then the first big "maintenance" item hit. The extra battery used by the start/stop ECO system (when you stop the engine would turn off and this battery was used to fire it back up). $600. Maintenance. That coupled with the their weak stance on towing larger trailers sent me looking for a Land Cruiser and here I am. Happy for it. BTW, a suspension upgrade/lift or larger tires would have been impossible. But I do miss that huge cargo space in the rear. I know I'm repeating myself but that is the one area where my LR4 had my LC beat hands down.

My other big problem, though, was the general direction of Land Rover. Look at the new Discovery. Are you kidding me? They should have kept the LR4 body style and addressed the reliability issues and updated the tech. But instead the created a techno-crossover that has far more electronics that will go bad and have to be fixed. Sheez. All I need is to have my grandkids standing in the rain wanting to get in the back of the car and we're waiting for the freaking push-button folding seat to do its thing and get out of the way. Way too many push buttons for me. All that stuff looks like $$$ post warranty.

Two years. Well heck, even the Yugo occasionally made it two years... :hillbilly::steer:

I still remember Yugo's TV ad campaign: "Because Everyone needs a Yugo sometime...!"

-Ya, just like everyone needs a hemrhoid... :moon::confused: :)

Ha the L405 RR and the LC200 couldn't be more different vehicles. Just look at any Range Rover forum vs IH8Mud or any LC forum. The RR forum is 100% "what is wrong with my Rover?" vs IH8Mud is actually people enjoying their LC in the great outdoors.

Also the amount of *h*t condition, non running L322 and P38 RR, Discos 1 and 2, and sometimes LR3s on a major metrolpolis Craigslist for less than $3500 is uncanny. They all have somewhere between 130-170k miles on them too! There is a reason why they are priced like that and a *h*t UZJ100 or 80 series is at least $6k with at somewhere almost double the mileage of those sub $3500 Rover.

Sure the TATA LRs are a bit better put together, but I'd much rather have an S-Class over a Range.

I can say something good about the RR: it is why I ended up with a LC200! Liked the RR looks and was surprised how "affordable" they were on CL. Then did the research. "Run away." "Great for stay-home mom who can afford to spend an afternoon a week at the dealer." "CarMax stopped selling extended warranties...only for RR/LR". And some quant data saying it was least reliable every year ... and 2x worse than the next-worst brand. Dumpster fire.

Asked 2 LC owners and 1 4R owner their experiences: each one said, "best car I have ever had." That clinched it for me!!

Congrats to Land Rover for maintaining it's position near the bottom of the latest dependability ratings. They must be so proud.

Why do people buy these things?

Bmw tied w/Toyota? My wife is happy about Porsche. What vehicles bring Toyota down?

Consumer Report's brand reliability rating puts Toyota #1 and BMW #5. They don't have enough data on Land Rover to rate it, but if they did, I would expect it to be near bottom (just like on JD Power).

CR lists the Taco as being Toyota's least reliable model, which seems odd to me.

As to why people keep buying Land Rovers, I suspect that they actually lease them, so that they don't keep them more than a few years. The interiors are just gorgeous. I'm sure they are nice, when they work. I just don't trust them to keep working for very long.

New Tacomas are not doing as well in the reliable category compared to previous generations.

Any idea what issues they are having?

I dabble in the Tacoma Forums (for the group buy section). From what I read; body mount bushing failing in under 7k miles, transmission response issues (put it into drive, wait, finally clunking/jerking into gear) and a loud rear diff. But again, these are forum complaints so who knows how serious. The exhaust crossover pipe being lower than the rest of the rig is bizarre too.

That's odd. Aren't both of the transmissions carry-over parts?
I think Toyota switched to a 6 speed auto from the previous gen 4 speed. I was looking but the tranny issues and the car (versus truck) engine were both big turnoffs.

I'm with you there. I'm not a fan of the V6s in both the Taco and 4Runner -- not enough low-end torque and loud when pressed into higher RPM.

The quiet, strong, low-end torque of the 5.7 (and 4.7 before that) is a great luxury. I can accelerate quickly without disturbing the Mrs.

Wish Toyota bring in the Hilux, problem solved!!

Im amazed every time I see that new LR commercial of the Japanese driver driving an RR Sport up the long staircase into the clouds. Its pretty neat until he get to the very top and gets high-centered on the last step. I can't believe LR put that commercial out! I would probably put up with a D90, D110, or an early RR Classic for a while, I like those, but I still wouldn't trust them, and would probably end up getting sick of it. Its kind of like the hunter who has a cabinet full of fancy European shotguns in his living room or whatever, but when you see him out in the field he's got an old Remington 1100 in his hands.

.

Every time something went wrong it was $5000. Very comfortable seats though.

Great to have good seat waiting for the tow truck.

What's amazing to me about Toyota's over-all quality numbers is the fact that Toyota's line of vehicles spans all the way from the super-cheap sub-compact...to the the high-end LC. One expects all aspects to be checked with higher end BMW or Porsche, but they don't really have a cheap end. Toyota maintains their dominant numbers despite the diverse line-up. Pretty impressive.
