I usually try to stay in one of the KOA/campground cabins that they have now, because with 2 kids and 2 adults, the back of the 80 gets full fast with pillows, blankets, sleeping bags and a tent. It's just easier to rent one of them, sleep in a decent bed (they provide the sheets) with heat, then it is to lug all the stuff along. Plus you still feel like your camping, you can have a fire, grill, some have great pools and be outdoors. I'm fairly opposed to hotels unless it's my last option.

BMThiker: we stayed here back in 09, very nice base camp for us, close to Durango, Ouray and Silverton.

Looks like the Amarillo KOA cabin is a go. If anything, my boy can swim in the pool a couple hours, and we will have A/C and heat, and real bed. No setting up stuff to crash for a night...now onto where to stay in Santa Fe!

Good app for your phone is called Allstays. Has just about every campground in the US on it along with directions, maps and reviews. As well it has gas and food locations. I've used it quite often.

growing up we used to stay in the cabins at the KOA's all the time. But now they cost as much as a hotel. A good internet search usually gets me a hotel for the same price if not better. Being able to go to the bathroom without going outside is worth it. Also when I go out camping, going to the bathroom involves a shovel. :)
