Can I replace the steering studs without removing the arms or bottoms provided the cone washers are removed? What size are these things on a 77? Wife is coming home and her rig is down.

Thanks

Would be far easier with the arms and lower trunion cap removed....

11mm would be the stock size on a front axle to 12/78.

01/79 and later are 12mm.

Thanks Poser found it in FAQ. Just in a panic. Do you know the thread pitch 1.25 1.5?? Are the inner and out different?

Thanks Kurt.

Trunion cap is removed I had just installed steering arm and found one stud is bunged up so they're all going to be changed. In retrospect I should of just gotten some 60's knuckle and been done with this these 77 white elephants. I have limited resources on this rock but our Ace has a great bolt section with marine, sae, stainless, and ARP hardened studs. I'm walking around in there (like an idiot) trying to find 11mm anything. Good luck.

I'm going to try and remove the studs without pulling the steering bearing and arm. It seems like they should back right out without the cone washers. If worse comes to worse I ordered a new steering bearing and race with the new studs.

Damn, I was on such a roll with this project. Stop. Order parts. Wait.

On a positive note I found a parts supplier locally that brings in everything from Australia, save me some money on shipping with exchange rate.

I'll beat Poser to an answer :D

They said it couldn't be done! I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it with my own eyes!

Related to this question though--do you guys consider the newer style (with the E12 provision on it) to be much benefit for the large pattern knuckles? I've yet to have a problem removing a stud (other than a few exhaust studs), but it's an upgrade, no? Are there any other benefits to the newer design--in metallurgy or strength?

The E12 studs are not available for the 11mm small knuckle patterns, so the old school option is the option there. When dealing with the large pattern 12mm knuckle studs, I truly do perform the E12 setup, for several reasons. You can torque them into the knuckle without having to 'double nut' the stud which is time consuming and can mess up the threads. The other benefit is you can spot check the studs/nuts on the vehicle with a wrench, making sure the stud is not spinning if that makes sense. I actually put a dab of paint on the studs so you can visually look at them and make sure nothing has moved. Really its a moot point as all the dealer provided studs are E12, the old style might still be available under an obscure part number but if you look it up by application your getting the E12.
