So for starters I have read up on the different tools that can be homemade as well as doing the procedure without the SST. However I don't believe I have the skills or tools to make any of these tools myself. Is there anyone that may be willing to lend me the tool for a fee? I am in San Diego and will pay for shipping both ways of course. I was simply going to place the old shims back in but the axle housing had to be straightened and frankly I don't trust the work that was previously done on this. This is for a 88 BJ74.

Is there something special to a BJ74 knuckle tool that is different?

deepsea, did you loose, misplace, or eat the lower shims on the existing knuckle?

If no- please reuse them on the appropriate sides and use new shims for the preload. You only need the tool if you ate the shims or you switch housings or knuckle ends. Please read any number of the 1,000 threads on knuckle rebuilds.

Is till have them. However since the axle housing had to be straightened wouldn't that be like having a new housing?

Also which shim is supposed to be the bottom shim. I don't trust that it was done correctly by previous owners.

Wow! Pretty hostile crowd here. I don't know if this is standard in the 70 series forum or people just don't like you;).
As far as the knuckle centering, if you do not know which shim goes on the bottom of each knuckle, then you need to reenter the knuckle, as you correctly assessed. The centering tool is universal and isn't series specific. HTH.

Marlin sells a centering tool.
