Known Issues with 200 Series (2016-21)?

Are there any? I am considering on making the big plunge on a '21 and want to know what to expect if I keep it "forever?"
FWIW, I am an early maintenance junky , usually change fluids etc. earlier than expected.

1-2 Tranny shifting and radiator issue were addressed from prior MY so only issue is the info system stuck in the 90’s.😂

A few have had issues with some of the AC dash vents not working properly. I think it’s a software fix, but I haven’t experienced this. One thread on this

Mid18+ got the updated radiator so that isn’t an issue. In Tx/FL you won’t deal with KDSS valve issues, though it is still a good idea to coat it with LPS3 or similar. Transmission shift issues should be sorted by the newer software. There is the dash vent issue LSUfj brought up.. but it does seem rare.

Beyond those I can’t think of anything. They really got most of the issues sorted out this late in the generation.

Honey, where are the kids?

What are the transmission issues? For 2009 specifically. I notice mine thumps pretty good when taking off from dead stop.

In 2016 toyota moved to an 8-spd transmission that had a well-known very rough shift into second, and some other odd behavior. It was enough of an issue that toyota released a software fix for it.. not sure if this ever came to the level of a TSB but a bunch of users here had it done.

Your 2009 has a different transmission and a totally different issue if it is giving you a good thump. Should be the same 6-spd as in mine and it is smooth as butter, save for a little bit of shutter when hitting second at the top of the rev range at WOT.. which is acceptable given the weight/torque/rpm conditions it is dealing with. Plus I have seen other people write about this so I don't think it's unique to mine.

I took my 2016 to the dealership and inquired about the software update. The service advisor had no clue what I was asking for. Now I am looking for a different dealership

Good luck. Quality dealerships that actually know anything about a LC are few and far between.

None of them will know what you’re talking about. Talk to the service advisor and provide the service bulletin number (available on this forum in another thread on this update somewhere). That’s what I did, and it shifts much smoother after the update. It’s a great transmission.

Thank you. I'll search for it

You probably need to grease your driveshaft. I had a thump noise also from dead stop and getting on the gas. It would happen when I stopped more aggressively then took off. But it was consistent with only being on take off from dead stop, did some searching and on here and my symptoms related to others that said greasing their driveshafts worked. Gave it a try and sure enough that was my issue.

Compared to the rest of the series, how does the latest/last U.S. model compare to the rest as far as long term (200-300K+ miles ability to survive)?

It’s bigger and stronger and heavier. It’s only made in a special factory in Japan where you have to earn the right to build them. Even the engine which is the same being used in the tundra in the United States is manufactured in Japan for the LC/LX, with much lower production level for the LC/LX 5.7 liter engine and I would assume higher quality control in the Japanese factory. The chief engineer on the 200 series stated that it was built to last 25 years in a Third World country that’s good enough for me, along with these other facts. I would get one now before we no longer get them here in the United States. I realize it’s way more vehicle than anyone needs but I guess that’s part of the attraction😜😎

LC200 is the strongest, toughest, and most durable Land Cruiser ever made, bar none.

“The 200 series is the strongest Land Cruiser ever produced by Toyota, a statement I heard straight from the mouth of the product engineer in Nagoya, Japan.”

BTW, the product engineer is the lead engineer for Land Cruiser development...Mr. Sadayoshi Koyari.

What about the 4Runner?

😂

Brand new rear driveshaft completely eliminated that issue on my 08 LC with 201k. Rear ujoint was very loose/worn compared to the other. If that make any sense? Grease did nothing for it. Good luck
