Killing those rattles

mine is at the mid windshield/glareshield area; high pitched squeak on certain bumps.
The stealership first said they couldn't hear it, then said it would probably require taking out the dash which they had never done before.

No way, I still have the rattle.

But I'd travel to someone that knew these things to get it fixed. Makes me crazy.

I have something like this, but there are two sounds (could be from the same source). One is a buzz when you drive on a bumpy road (started about 70 mi after the windshield was replaced; there is a piece of foam in between the dash and windshield). The other is a rattle, like something's loose inside the center dash. The sounds seem to be audible only on some roads in this city (roads mostly suck), but on a recent trip to So. CA, I couldn't hear it at all, not on the way, and not while driving around So. Orange County. I've checked all bolts behind the glove box, and they are tight. Since searching for subtle sounds like this is often a crap-shoot, next time it's in at the dealership, I might have the tech pull the nav unit out and make sure all fasteners behind are tight. Creaks and rattles aren't covered by the CPO warranty.

Rattle under vehicle

I was hoping to hear a rattle described like the one in my '03 LC. It was bought via the internet (OCT last year) and I have been very happy overall (7k miles since delivery). Minor issues with a broken antenna mast and nav sys that stopped working suddenly. The rattle I get is generally when the vehicle isn't warmed up yet and I stop at a light. It seems to go away if the gear shifter is put into N. On a crosscountry trip over Christmas (S. AZ to MO and back) I noticed that it happened even if the engine was throughly warmed up. (Serious cold and lots of ice) Any thoughts would be most helpful.

Is it a loud, buzzing plastic sound from the rear left quarter? I had something like this, thought it was maybe the subwoofer mounting bolts coming loose or something (someone here had a similar problem w/ loose woofer bolts). It would only be heard when it was cold outside and the engine wasn't warmed up yet.

Nope, it turned out to be the plastic panel in the left rear wheel well (the one just above the mud flap). The right side doesn't have this. At least when I had the Kaymar installed, the left valence of the bar didn't stick out quite far enough to bolt the mud flap through with the two inner bolts that attach the mud flap and that plastic panel to the body. The installer just used the three outer bolts and bolted the mud flap to the rear bar but not the body, then the innermost one w/ the bracket to the body. One day, there was a strong cross wind. Wife an baby waited in the car at the supermarket (engine off) while I was shopping. Wife heard the same buzzing sound, and said it was from the rear left fenderwell. I removed the mud flap, re-attached the two missing bolts, then reattached the mud flap. There still is potential for that piece to buzz by the way it's attached with those plastic clips. I was thinking of sticking something like dynamat to it to increase its mass.

Does anyone have pictures of a factory sub swap or sub model that would work well? Is the factory sub a 8"? Mine sounds bad and I considered replacing it with aftermarket sub that would maintain the stock appearance and keep my existing cargo area. I also plan to replace all stock speakers except for the door tweeters in front: maybe. I've also been looking at posts for a NAV unit to replace the dash CD player..... I have a 99 LC

Hello all. I've been visiting this site for a while but recently joined. Very helpful information to be found. I have an 06 LX that has an annoying rattle/vibration coming from the front passenger side. Tech drove with me and said it was coming from the clove box. They took it apart and placed some felt in a few spots. I was vibration free for about 2 weeks but it has since returned, though not quite as loud. I decided to take the glove box off and check it myself, very nervous doing so. Funny, I don't remember being nervous taking apart stuff in my excursion. With the box removed I noticed the plastic shroud was kissing metal on the upper right hand side. I placed a strip of weather seal between the shroud and the metal, test drove and seemed to have killed the noise. I'll give it a couple of weeks and post an update.

Now for some spirits to celebrate my post!

Just an update to this post. The rattle/vib came back so I decided to remove the glove box and platic shroud. I inspected the inside and found a couple of source possibilities. First, there is a metal brace welded to the metal catch for the box. It attaches to another metal brace and is secured by the center screw for the shroud. Metal on metal. I made a gasket of sourts out of spongie drawer liner and placed it between to two braces. Second, there was an electrical cable runing through the compartment and it had slack. I fed it behind the braces mentioned above. With everything reattached, the cable would be secured, preventing it from bouncing off its suroundings. Then I lined to back side of the shroud with the same stuff and reassemble them. The box has a more solid sound when closing and so far no rattles from that area.

The next area to tackle is the shifter console. But I have not mustered enough courage to disassemble that. Maybe on my next service trip I'll ask the tech to remove it and put some dampening material underneath.

On the plus side, I located the cabin filter so I'll be adding that on my list of diy items.:)

Dude. For any mod you're supposed to post pictures :)

I know. I thought about that after I had everything in. Oh well, not much going on tomorrow so maybe I'll just spend some time digging around there again and snap a couple of pics.:D

Does anyone elses dash creak right at the top of the gauge cluster where it meets the dash? If I pinch the dash and cluster together, it stops, so it's likely the top of the dash. Just wondered if anyone had this before and pulled their cluster out.

I had the same problem, Checked the screws and they were tight, but I discovered that they were not holding cluster tight against the dash..the screws are too long. So removed both screws and added some small washers so that the screws now hold the cluster tight against the dash...fixed it. Simple but anoying problem.

Asking once again.......

Has anyone tried it? Does it actually work?

I have some rattles in my vehicle. Those really are annoying. I am having a hard time narrowing them down as well. Found one big one today though - the rear seats pulled up were rattling like crazy. Put those down and the rattle has gone down but still is there.....

From the front and the back.......

If this thing works, I want to give it a try.

Finally got enough courage to remove the shifter console. Only 4 clips! Here are some photos:

Wow ,this post in kinda all over the place but still helpful.Has anybody figured out a way to put a real sub in that factory hole. I would love to gut it and put some thump in there.

Thanx Hoser

I guess my search skills are not very good,An eight would be plenty for me,don't know about the amp though where did he put his jack?

Bringing this thread back from the dead. I have had a VERY irritating creak/rattle in my center console. It seemed to be around the are where the cupholder is joined to the console. When the noise occurred I found I could stop it by either pushing down hard or lifting up.

Anyway, today I got a chance to pull up the console and fix it. Pulling the console if pretty easy -- just need to pop 6 clips as show in the FSM, then disconnect 4 wiring connectors (AHC, ECT, seat heaters).

In my case the problem was that the three screws that attach the cup holder to the console were loose, allowing the two pieces to rattle against each other. A quarter turn each with a screwdriver solved the problem.

I've attached a few pics for others' reference: view underneath the console and two pics showing the placement of the three screws mentioned above.
