Killing those rattles

well you have a sleeping platform, that right there helps keep the mud crowd at bay. Thats a real interesting setup you have, but one question, why is the carpeting grey? And do you get rattles from things inside there? That might be why you hear things so much.

and we always have a long wish list....mine inludes a AVO Tuning turbo system, Big Brake Kit, ARB Bumper, Hella HID Driving lights and a few others.....for the price of that stuff i could just get another LX470 the same year as mine!

Nah, I used that same carpet to do the insides of the cargo boxes :) They were already stealthy.

The carpeting is actually closer to black than grey, but it's not like I had many choices. It came from the trunk of an ES330, and they're all black. A tan RX trunk mat might work, but I kinda like it the way it is now :) It's grown on me.

You could also use that mesh foam shelf liner material sold at Home Depot.

While running a backup camera wire behind the panel in the left rear cargo area, I found a couple of loose bolts that were probably the source of some buzzing noises heard when cranking some tunes with a lot of bass....

One of the bolts holding in the factory subwoofer was loose. Tightened it up.

The bolt that holds both the ground wires from the rear 12V power socket, and from the fuel pump controller on the left rear D pillar, was VERY loose. I had noticed intermittent problems with the cig lighter socket. The fuel pump never acted up, probably because its metal case is mounted to the pillar with its own bolt. Seems somebody at Toyota Motors was on holiday and didn't torque that bolt in well enough. I wonder how many people bring their TLCs in with fuel cut-off issues and have the entire pump replaced because of a simple loose ground bolt.

Both of these were found after removing the left rear cargo area/wheel hump plastic cover.

I also added some felt behind the rear license plate. The plate was digging into the paint in a couple of small spots. Had to grind out and hit with touch-up paint first.

Thanks for the ideas!

IIRC, all you have to do is take out the seatbelt bolt on the floor, and it it’s just clips that’s holding it in. You’ll need to remove the rubber around the door part way too.
I removed my factory sub and mounted my amp in its place.

what amp are you running? I have a 500/1 JL that ied love to move into that space and get it off my cargo bed.

DMX84 check out pic

I tried to show all the fastener points on the panel.

Unscrew the cargo net hook at the top of rear opening (red arrow).

Remove the plastic hinged flap covering the tailgate opening (Blue). Not really shown here. but it's 4 (?) screws and pry/pop them up. This will expose a pull-up plastic fastener on the bottom of the cargo panel. (Red).

There's another black pullout fastener next to the tire jack bracket (Red).

Remove the 2 seatbelt bolts. (Red). They are covered by rubber sleeves. Just slide these back to expose the bolts.

Peel up some of the left rear passenger door rubber/fabric gasket trim from bottom (blue). You might have to pop off the left rear door tread plastic panel first to get to it; has two fasteners that pop up.

Unscrew Torx screw holding the 3rd row seat anchor plastic trim (Red).

Now you can pull back the carpet edge that's tucked under the panel (Aqua Blue).

Grab ahold of the panel at one of the ends (rear first?) and pull toward the interior. You will feel the popper fasteners (Red circles) give way as you go.

Disconnect the power socket connector (Green) at the rear end, before you try to move the panel too far.

There are a bunch of those poppers (Red) along the whole shebang. They are along the top and also just under the speakers. The picture is just an approximation. Just go slow so you don't puncture or crush any speaker cones. Listen for any poppers that might accidentally fall off the panel and drop behind the speaker.

Once you get the panel off, you should see the speaker unit has 5 screws and wire connector. You might have to pop out the window trim to get at the speaker's screws. That trim is also held in place by a few poppers. Just pull toward the vehicle's interior enough to get to the screws.

Have fun. (oooh! By the way, when you have the panel off, do me a favor and see if the ground screw for the power socket & fuel pump controller at the back is screwed in tightly).

mines screwed tightly i know because i used that as a ground for my Whelen LEDs that i have mounted.

nice write up thanks very much. This is extremely helpful...i might be doing a bunch of rewiring these weekend to free up that storage compartment area on the other side.

It’s a 4 channel amp by Hot setup (Orin) I’m running in stereo from my stock deck using lo level input adaptors. The single processing is going through my Audio Control 2sx (Currently crossover at 110). Not sure about your amp size, but IIRC there was room for about 14 inches in length and about 10 in width. What I did was press in captive hard where on the amp (Pem Nuts) and used the LC frame to secure it to.
I also installed a power distribution block too.
If I had pictures of the install I would have posted them. I could take a picture of the crossover as it’s adjustable through the jack opening.

Does anyone elses dash creak right at the top of the gauge cluster where it meets the dash? If I pinch the dash and cluster together, it stops, so it's likely the top of the dash. Just wondered if anyone had this before and pulled their cluster out.

the general 'mud population must think you dance around in a pink tutu the way you complain about these little noises....lol.

And not that i know of, i dont have any noise coming from that top part of my gauge cluster.

I was thinking of the foam used to pack computer parts like video cards and the like - other than the rattle from all the junk I stuff in the ashtray (extra valve caps, spare tire lock key, eye glasses screwdriver, etc) and the glove compartment my '02 LC is solid as a rock. Knock wood, I've never driven a quietier vehicle.

You're welcome.

Re: "...i might be doing a bunch of rewiring these weekend to free up that storage compartment area on the other side...."

Take pics. I've never opened that side before.

well i thought about it and well, its totally not worth my effort. I would have to run 6 new strobe cables and a new pair of wires for the electronic air horn. too much money and a weekends worth of work for not much achieved.

But i might still take that subwoofer out...its just slowing me down.

well, had nothing to do tonight so i took out my stock subwoofer that was an extra "6.8Lbs" Well after i took it out i looked inside and i saw my fender from inside the car. I thought, i cant keep that like that, too much road noise will come thru. So i made an extremely fast trip to the local best buy....using the trusty LS430...damn that thing flys. Anyways, took the sub out and slapped some dynamat on the fender for some giggles. I also put it on my tailgate covering all the cables and holes and wires. Basicly just took a sheet and slapped it on the tailgate and cutout the holes for the clips.

As far as rattles i didnt notice any more rattling, but there is a big empty space inside the panelling now...i guess i could stash some extra clothing in there if needed...and gain access to it thru the jack door.

here are some random pictures i took. And for anyone who looks at my sub and goes, uhhhhh mine looks different wtf? I had the premium system for 2000 in the LX470, the nakasushi or whatever it is, lol! jk.

edit: is it just me or do my windows look reallllly dark? Oh right, they are 5% tint i forgot.

Newbie post/intro

I have a buzz on the glove box. It's very slight, so much so that I'm generally the only one to hear it - funny thing though, my grandfather (who is hard of hearing) will ride maybe 3min with the buzz before wedging his knee against the door ;)

Anyway, I mentioned it a couple times when I was still taking it to the dealer, and they said there was no noise - bull.

The weird part though, it goes away with just a slight touch on the glove box door.

Any ideas?

Hello all. I've been visiting this site for a while but recently joined. Very helpful information to be found. I have an 06 LX that has an annoying rattle/vibration coming from the front passenger side. Tech drove with me and said it was coming from the clove box. They took it apart and placed some felt in a few spots. I was vibration free for about 2 weeks but it has since returned, though not quite as loud. I decided to take the glove box off and check it myself, very nervous doing so. Funny, I don't remember being nervous taking apart stuff in my excursion. With the box removed I noticed the plastic shroud was kissing metal on the upper right hand side. I placed a strip of weather seal between the shroud and the metal, test drove and seemed to have killed the noise. I'll give it a couple of weeks and post an update.

Now for some spirits to celebrate my post!
