It's always bothered me that the storage areas are all hard plastic: console, glove box, & door pockets are the main ones.

I was considering buying some felt or speaker box material to cover those surfaces, but thought I'd ask first to see if anyone else has done anything about this, and what material did they use?

Felt would be very hard to keep clean. Would this be to dampen rattles actually caused by the parts or caused by items within rattling against the plastic. The rubber mats intended for tool boxes and cabinets might work well for keeping items from vibrating.

The only time I get a rattle is when something is laying up against the transfer lever.

the only thing ive done to prevent rattles is put two peices of weather stripping behind my rear licence plate and put a foam bead around my center console lid so it didnt make any noise over bumpy roads. I do have a few rattles in the back but i think its just because of age and from me constantly pulling the panels off to do mods.

I think speaker box material would be over-kill in places like your glovebox and doors. Im trying to think of any material that would work. You could pimp it out and glue suede to the areas you want to dampen rattles. ha! My LS430 has some sort of felt like material in the center console and in the glove box to reduce rattle noises but the door pockets are still hard plastic.

Hah! I did the same thing w/ the weatherstripping behind the license plate and between the plate frame and plate! That buzzing sound from the license plate frame it used to make when closing the hatch drove me nuts...I'd expect it from a domestic SUV, but not a vehicle of the caliber of the 100.

No this is more to deaden rattles of items in the glove box or console; loose change, we have 3 changer cartridges (mine, wifes, mutual) that make noise.

Jim, I think 1loudLX did it to prevent the rattling from other reasons. I’m going to do this too. Thanks for the ideas!

Buzzing

I have a buzz on the glove box. It's very slight, so much so that I'm generally the only one to hear it - funny thing though, my grandfather (who is hard of hearing) will ride maybe 3min with the buzz before wedging his knee against the door ;)

Anyway, I mentioned it a couple times when I was still taking it to the dealer, and they said there was no noise - bull.

The weird part though, it goes away with just a slight touch on the glove box door.

Any ideas?

Actually when i closed the tailgate it really pissed me off when the plate rattled. But i eventually did something about it when i put a JL Audio subwoofer in the back and it rattled like crazy outside.

LX pilot, i think i have the same issue. Once my garage floor is done drying and i get all my shelves back in place and can park my LX back in the garage, ill look into some solutions for all these rattles as im starting to hear them now that you guys are mentioning everything. Its too cold outside to be doing things to my truck...i dont even want to wash it.

Stay tuned till this weekend ill look into doing some mods for us so we can have quiet 100s....even though mine is loud.

I've also got a buzz coming from my instrument cluster occaisionally. If I pinch the dash and top lip of the of the cluster tighter together, it goes away, but the cluster screws are tightened all the way. I might try to pull my cluster out and put some felt or something along the top edge where the plastic meets the dash.

I have two 10in JL’s in mime, they sound great. (Except for the license plate rattle;) ).

To help with the rattle of the plate use Dynamat. Fold it over so the sticky side holds the plate to the truck. Find the material at a local car stereo shop. You only need two pieces the size of a quarter. But they also have a plate kit for those with subs that want to go to the extreme.

why use dynamat when you can get two pieces of high density foam weatherstriping? He probably has some laying around the house and if not, stop by a lexus dealership and they will fix it for freeeee. At least they did for meeeee.

Ive got one JL 10W6v2 in the back...i didnt feel like shaking the crap out of my truck nor frying my brain with all those sound waves....plus i felt like keeping some cargo area so i could actually load ish in the back without having to compromise much space.

Well as of right now it looks like i might be able to get my truck in my garage tonight so i might look into things tonight. Still have a bunch of crap to tidy up first tho.

Well I had some leftover speaker box carpet (very thin stuff, like felt) which I cut to fit in the glovebox and armrest. I'll do a test drive and give results.

picture of material/install?

I havent been able to get out and find some material to use to dampen sound. Maybe tommorrow ill look around. Been sleeping during the day every day, lol.

Here are pictures of the material I used, speaker carpet from Electronics Parts Outlet, and the install on my two "problem" spots. It has made a HUGE difference.

well isht! I want some of that stuff! HAHAHA tokens for tolls...funny....you dont have a tolltag?

Im going to have to hand it to you. Nice job and install. Now i wonder if theres anywhere local i can grab that stuff.......how did you mount it to the upper part of the glove? What type of adhesive did you use?

In my ash tray i have a thin peice of rubber cut to the shape of the bottom. I still get rattles but i empty the change frequently, its just there to empty my pockets. My quaters for meters and such, are in my center console in a quater dispenser i bought at the container store. Just like what either a bus driver might have or something.

lol those aren't toll tokens, those are Chuck E. Cheese tokens for my two year old :) my ash tray has my aux-in and dvd player remote eye in it :o

For adhesive, I ended up using <drumroll> Elmer's wood glue. Yeah, wood glue. It's weird, but it worked perfectly. I don't have any lumps under the material, and the excess peeled or scraped off with my fingernail easily.

hahaha oh ok chuck cheese tokens, lol!

Aux in and DVD player remote eye? I gota see this! What are all the different sneeky mods you have? You keep coming up with new things to tell me about on both forums! And yes, ok fine maybe we will do the spoiler thing....probably would be better on here anyways...wait no nobody cares about spoilers here they want 33" tires and lift.

Ok, here are all my "mods". You're probably going to get me ridiculed by the Mud crowd as a pink panty mobile driver.

Entertainment system
Headrest monitors
DVD player in center console next to OE dvd changer
- eye for this in ashtray
FM modulator hardwired
- will output DVD player to OE sound system
- aux in for iPod in ashtray
Nav system DVD in motion hack
- video tapped to output to headrest monitors
* So we can watch 1 movie in front and 1 in back, or have back monitors playing same movie as the front. ML sound system will play either DVD player.

Storage drawers and sleeping platform with OE-style finishing, pictures here.
Navigation system updated to Gen4 cpu
Voice command system installed
Center console & glove box soundproofed

I think that's everything so far, but I still have a long wish list!
