I know there are a dozen threads on here about the kickdown cable, but I couldn’t find an answer to this question.

I’ve been trying to adjust my cable and I’ve been getting odd behaviors, when accelerating often the car will not shift into the next gear until I release my foot from the accelerator.
Today, for example I was in the mountains and had a cruise control on as it would go up a hill, it would almost redline instead of shifting into the next gear. As soon as I took the cruise control off it shifted.

I am trying to figure out if I need more tension or less. I have it at the 1mm recommended here, but I don’t think it’s set correctly.

Could anyone tell me if these symptoms I should give it more slack or more tension?
Thanks as always for your help.

show some pictures of the cable installed at the TB
Its not uncommon for these to be routed incorrectly resulting in odd behaviour like the image below from another thread

I just loosened it and it seems to behave a little bit better but I won’t know till I get into some Hills.

Keep in mind that over time, cables stretch out- FSM settings for kick down cable is likely not applicable anymore. Sounds like you're on it- play around with it until it works as expected.
Cheers!

Timely thread as I've been wrestling the same on my hdj81. It typically shifts down and if move the throttle at all, it jumps.back down a gear and then returns. I'm iut about 2mm, but still trying ronfigure iut the right placement. On my old gas 90, once I got it right, the cruise control.atarted worming again.

I had mine at about 2mm the last time I moved it back to 1mm, seems better. But has a really hard down shift if, for example, you are doing 30mph and stomp the gas, ot will down shift hard (I guess late).
Would a fluid change help any of this? I don’t know if it’s ever been changed. Does not look very dirty on the dipstick.

I won’t know if I really fixed it till I can get in the mountains with the cruise control on again. The one lesson I learned though for sure is that it’s highly sensitive. .5 mm will make a difference.

Hi all,
So the issue I have is when getting to a circle in the road, I slow down to about where the tranny should be in second gear but is in third, so I have to step on the throttle to go to second. In other cases I can be a tad slower then first will be selected when I get out of the circle. Where do I set where the tranny see that I am travelling slow, not that slow to be in first but in second so when I get out of the circle I am in the correct gear. I have played with the TPS, the kickdown cable and the short rod between the throttle cable and kickdown. Any advice would be appreciated!
