Wife wants keyless entry on our 80 series (don’t ask).
It’s more difficult than I thought to find one that works with that car. A local audio shop said they could install keyless entry for $399 and add remote start for + $200.

Question: I see people mention keyless entry as a “dealer installed option”, is this equipment still available anywhere? I am thinking, it would be plug and play so I can self install.

Most people throw it in the trash. My wife complained when I pulled it in the 95 she drives. She got over it, not worth the headache in my book. There have been few post of guys keeping the unlock lock function but pulling the alarm side. I’m sure you could get one from ant cruiser junk yard or in classified

This would be the RS3000 system which was a stock option. My 97 didn’t get this from the factory and I do not have the under seat harness, so I’d make sure you have a harness ready to go under the seat before trying to find and install one. They don’t have the best reputation, so certainly not worth it unless your 80 is prewired for it.

There is nothing all that special about adding keyless entry to the FZJ80. Viper still makes simple keyless entry kits for about $100 if you don’t care about the alarm side. There are also tons of super cheap options on amazon/ebay that also probably work just fine. I just installed one a few weekends ago. There are maybe 5 or 6 wires you tap into, all located in the driver kick panel area. The one thing to be prepared for is that two diodes need to be used for the unlock circuit, any standard 1N4001 diodes will work. Other than that, grab a few posi-taps and you should be able to knock it out in 2 hours. My '97 still has the stock system (RS3000 I'm pretty sure, as mentioned above) and it works great. I had to purchase/setup aftermarket keyfobs and I had to replace the little noise maker / beeper under the hood for it but other than that it's been trouble free and I enjoy having it.

When I setup the keyfobs years ago I also changed some configuration settings to disable security and the interior beeps, etc. so the system is pretty much stripped down to keyless entry only. My son did prove recently that if you hit the keyfob button a lot of times that the horn will start honking/etc. but that seems to be the only remaining security feature.

I have seen many reports of issues from the og systems and a wiring audit wouldn't be the worst idea as that seems to be where the issues typically come up. I think these are a viable option though if you already have part of the system/harness in place or other reasons why this may be easier than a new system to setup.

It’s on my list of things to order, but full disclosure I haven’t used it. I came across it on a FB post where someone else had installed it and liked it.
