Simpleton question, I know. Can anyone describe how to open the key FOB for battery replacement? I have a 2017 so the key is the basic 3 button FOB. Thanks!

Press button to remove metal key.
Insert end of key in a small slot on the end of the FOB case.
Twist to pop open.
Voila! You’re in!

I wrap the key in painter's tape to keep the case from being damaged when you twist.

You can, but I’ve twisted mine many times with the key and it’s fine. The key end is just the right wisth as the slot is designed to fit it.
More a danger if using a smaller flathead screwdriver that can twist to a sharper angle.

I throw in an extra battery in my owners manual. Is there a way to start the car with just the key not the keyfob

Thanks!! I may be wrong, but don't believe there is a way to start the car without the FOB. If the battery is dead, I believe you can hold the FOB up again the start button, which will enable you to press the button and start the car. But I'm not sure if you can start the car with just the key. Perhaps someone else has a different answer?

That is correct

No.
But you can start it with a dead battery by holding the fob against the start button to press it.

Yeah that key fob situation makes me wonder if anyone ever gets stranded. Like if I get dropped off at the airport and have the fob in my pocket and the wife goes shopping or something and doesn't have the other fob with her.....and many other worse scenarios I can think of. Don't care for the fob situation too much. I'd like to have a third fob to stash under the vehicle somewhere.

A FOB event/goof like isn’t really so different from a key event. One of you forgets a key and gets stranded too.

You CAN stash a fob, by the way. Just stash one with no battery. That way you can start with it against the start button..and still not enable the door handles for passers-by.

yeah I always keep extra batteries in the vehicle also. I like to put fobs in a waterproof bag and tape them with electrical tape somewhere underneath. They get covered with dirt and are invisible. I did the same with keys taped to a brake line or somewhere in the past. Diana might not like crawling under the vehicle, but if she was stranded it wouldn't bother her a bit....same as most of us. :)

Maybe put the no-battery FOB in the truck (hidden) and magnetically hide the little metal key outside. The metal key is TINY and would be much easier to hide effectively outside. No battery needed at all in the fob to start the truck...and with no battery, it won't interfere with the automatic door-lock sensors (if you leave a fob in the truck with a battery in it...your door handle sensors won't operate, as a precaution against theft).
