So I bought a credit keycard for our ‘08 LX.

Our local locksmith who previously successfully programmed our OEM key fob was unable to program our keycard.

We then bit the bullet and took the keycard to the dealer and they too also was not able to program the credit card key. Adding insult to injury, they still charged us $141 for the booked time.

The dealer claimed since the credit keycard is used it may carry the previous owner’s vehicle info and this they are unable to program it.

I have a few questions:

1. Are keycards/key fobs unprogrammable once they are initially programmed?

2. Is it normal to have dealers charge a key programming fee even if it was unsuccessful?

3. Can I mail in my keycard along with a keyfob to have it programmed? If so, anyone you guys recommend?

Thanks!

There may be answers to 1 and 3 in this thread.

Regarding number 2, if you brought a used (and maybe defective) key card to a dealer and they spent time trying to get it to work, then yes, I think you owe them time spent even if they were not successful.

Yes, dealer will charge you as they spent time working for you.

Thanks @jeproks

I think the local locksmith forgot about the card being unlocked. If he can't do it, I'll go with your ebay source.

Thanks!

Ok still having issues. 3rd locksmith still can’t program it. It was purchased as an unlocked key BTW so unlock/lock was not an issue. And to confirm the 3rd locksmith did show it was unlocked.

Here is my cardkey info:

I believe it is compatible with my ‘08 LX?

Some threads say programming may be sensitive to a weak battery.

also this post Here. and the reply in post 47 suggest maybe you have the wrong key fob. I don’t know though.
