Kenwood DNX7160 install

Nice! That may be just the ticket.

The only downside is the theft risk! I end up leaving the truck in places where it would be an easy target. Like snowshoeing up of Hwy 35 today. Do y'all worry about that side of it? I suppose windshield-mounted nav is just as much of a risk, except you can hide that.

And the LC stereo can literally be removed in under 2 minutes - less if you don't care about the center dash trim... :frown: I love my Kenwood HU with the nav. Pretty sure the other plug is the diversity antenna, as mentioned. And with the iPod hookup, you'll never listen to the radio again. I've literally never played a CD in it, only to test the functionality after first install.

Any updates to how the topo upload process went?

Oh, easy, first you need mapsource, you should find a download somewhere it is free. then you installed the map in mapsource and unlock them if necessary.

You need a sd card reader, put the card in the reader, then you run ta exe in the mapsource folder called mapinstall.exe or something like that. You select the map set then the region. Once that is done the program will create a map file and copy the file to the sd card. when all is over simply take the sd card and put it in the Kenwood. Go in the kenwood gps / settings / map / info and there you can select any map you have. I 'm running now with the city navigator that comes with the unit and on the SD card, i have ibycus Canada topo / Canada metro guide. I will soon add us topo or us ibycus.

That thing is so cool i could probably use it also on my boat with marine maps, but i couldn't obviously run any NMEA2000 stuff.

I'll post up pictures but my topo are not as detailed as the US 24k version

edit your post...it takes two hours to remove the radio!
Right. Two hours to get past my flame-emitting sliders, silence the 160db alarm, defeat my rabid, flesh-eating dog, defeat Chuck Norris (who lives in my truck to protect it) and then, another two mintues to pop the stereo...

I once broke the frame on my cruiser and Chuck Norris fused it back together with one roundhouse kick to the bumper.

I believe the small antenna plug goes to the in window antenna on the right rear window....!!!

I didnt plug mine in the pioneer 3200BT I installed 2 weeks ago and my reception is clear

Yesterday i bought online on Garmin site the Bridseye satelite. I was hoping i might be able to get this working for the kenwood gps. But no...I installed if for my Oregon gps, pretty cool feature, i can download and overlay satelite imagery. I emailed Garmin to get this nice feature working on the kenwood gps...that would be very nice.

I'll be interested to see how Garmin replies. That's what worries me - that Garmin views the auto products differently than the outdoor products and in the future I'll have compatibility problems with updating maps on the 7160.

I'm not worried about map update, the Garmin in the kenwood has a serial, therefore anymap that can be installed on mapsource can be unlock with the gps serial and installed on the kenwood.

Ya, it's not the unlocking that worries me, it's the ability to display the data correctly on a device that isn't Garmin's target device. Admittedly, I'm a little naive when it comes to the portability of map data.

I'm regsitered at my.garmin.com, i went and added a new device, i simply put my serial and it recognize the gps model in the kenwood. All the support is through Garmin, and when you go on Kenwood site for support concerning the gps you are fowarded to Garmin web site.

Now, will Garmin offer life city navigator update for the unit? i doubt. Anyhow for what it does right now i think it is better then any Head unit available right now.

A support specialist email me, he thought the idea was very good and suggested to email them with a request to have the Kenwood / garmin gps support birdseye sattelite imagery. More email they receive faster it will happen....

So drop them a email and ask to have birdseyes sattelite imagery to work with kenwood / garmin GPS.
