The automotive "decline" started a long time ago, roughly coinciding with the development and introduction of the emissions and fuel economy compromised UR engines.

But new cars do seem much worse now... like all things have gone to crap at once with this most recent generation of vehicles, versus individual things slowly declining over the past decade or two.

Drive an early/mid 2000's (peak Toyota) model then immediately sit in and drive the latest 2025 of the same or similar model. It's just a complete and drastically different driving experience... it's mostly worse.

I call this the airline seat problem. Every industry has it. People say they want bigger, more comfortable seats with more legroom. But what they buy is 17" wide seats with a 30" pitch.

Same with vehicles. People say they want quality and durability but what sells is style and tech.

i don’t know about cheap, new GX550’s are about the same price new as LX570’s were new in 2022. Half ton trucks are $70K+, heck Tacomas are $50-$70k+

My buddy owns a large auto repair shop. He said the minor things people come to him for these days is shocking (like Changing wiper blades), things that are very easy DIY, 10-15 years they never had people ask them to do. And mentions the major things people ignore for a long time (as they are oblivious of).

Downstream effect of "convenience services" like food home delivery from any/every restaurant, groceries deliveries, etc. People get used to never having to do anything for themselves. They lose not only the hands-on skills, but the critical thought that goes into it, the confidence of being able to solve a problem they've never dealt with before, etc.

(I honestly don't understand how people rationalize paying $10-25 for someone to deliver them - already extremely expensive - fast food.)

We're watching the 1923 series right now (prequel spin-off from Yellowstone) and there was a scene in which the main family went into town and came across a salesman peddling the first electrical appliances (washing machine, stove, etc.) along with electricity itself. One of the main characters said something along the lines of "if we buy all these conveniences, we will end up living and working for them and for the banks, instead of for ourselves." I'm butchering the exact quote, but the thought definitely resonated with me when I heard it. The more conveniences you accept as part of your daily life, the less self-reliant you become, the more enslaved (to technology, to debts, to "the economy," etc.) you get. It's important to have a self-defined and self-enforced measure of "I have enough."

So yeah, keep your 200, the Duttons said so.

agree with you. Cheap is what I want... I would fly standing up if it was cheaper and they would let me. When I am in japan I have to pay boatlods of $$ to ride the shinkansen. When I am in Dhaka, I can ride the roof of the trains for free..

I love my 01 Taco 4 door. I paid 43K for my 2022 Taco DCLB 4x4 OR, since in CA it is illegal to buy a SR5 DCLB. I thoght that was aa lot..

70k for mexican built garbage tacos are insane.

most people I know... do the Return on time calculation
