I just drove a 97 40th LC with all options including the front/rear lockers. Vehicle had 69K miles and was in excellent condition inside and out. Clean seats, rugs and dash. Ran well with no funky noises. Guy is asking 18900 but I may offer 18000. Nice vehicle but its still 18K. Supposedly he already got an offer for 18500 but that person won't be looking at the truck for another week. What do you think? I plan on keeping the LC for a long time (hopefully!) and using it as a secondary vehicle

Thanks

Chadi,
I prefer to pay less and accept one with higher miles and use the price difference for maintenance and upgrades. If $18k is in your price range then jump on it. 69k is very low mileage. Do a CarFax and check for rust assuming it has lived it's life in CT. You're not going to find many with fewer miles.

Chadi,

I'm not sure I belive the guy (I'm being sarcastic...of course I don't belive him). He says he has an offer for $18.5, but the guy who offered him that has not seen the truck? Does that sound beliveable to anyone? I'm not hurting for $$, but neither I or anybody I now with the minimum number of firing neurons in their cranium would offer anything to a guy selling a used car/truck without having looked at it. Be careful dealing with the guy, since if he's already being less than totally honest with you, who knows what else he may not be telling you. Caveat Emptor.

Since you offered this guy $18K already, you can't resonably back down if you end up buying, but I wouldn't go higher. I'm guessing he's just BSing you trying to negotiate on price. Ignore him. If truck is in good condition and you're comfortable with the price, then you found something you can hold onto for quite some time to come.

I actually haven't made an offer yet. Told him I would get back to him. I want the truck just not the 18K debt. Catch 22 I guess, but I'd rather have the truck

Offer him 14K using the buyer's method of negotiation of working from lowest to highest vs. the seller's method of highest to lowest :)

An offer of 14K would basically be your way of calling his bluff on the other offer.

get a carfax on that one, find out where it has been and if the mileage has been fondled, the mileage is the only reason he can ask that high price for the truck look, very closely for rust, it seams to show up first on hardware around that radiator support, horns, steering dampener etc on the northern rigs I looked at (almost all of the cruisers for sale here are transplants), also oddly the heater pipe that runs from the T-stat housing, also the door hardware, I would not pay that much for a northern truck unless it was garaged in the winter no mater how low the mileage

Is this the one in Bristol? Didn't you have a friend of a friend who was a detail guy at a Toyota dealer look at it? What did he say. If I looked at it I'd have plenty to say. Of course you might have to pay asking price when I'm done.

Even if it's in perfect condition, it is way over priced. Even at 15k even it's over priced. Should be closer to $13.5 or at most $14k.

Don't matter to me though as it's your money and not mine. I think you're blowing some unnecessarily though.

Junk,

Let me know if you find a clean '97 LC (69K miles) for that price...

Chuck

yup, I would not believe that the guy really has an offer for 18.5K either.
These guys have to take a lying test to get their business cards...

$18K a bit high but not obscenely so -in the PRK.

Junk calls just about anything over 15k overpriced regardless of the mileage. It *IS* hard to find a cruiser with such low mileage, so just check it out more thoroughly (maintanence records, carfax, etc.) and do your best to bargain him down.

as posted elsewhere, there is also one in Santa Barbara with 70K or so. Asking 18K something.

Rick,

the one in Bristol was not nearly as clean. Also they didn't take my offer so it never even saw shop where my friends friend could take a look. I'm going to make an offer this morning. I'll let you guys know what happens. If it turns out well I'll be looking for some trails in about a weeks time to get me feet wet (know of any good ones in CT?). Thanks

Chadi

Don't be too obsessed with mileage. A truck with 69K and less maintenance but pretty leather will blow a head gasket sooner than a rougher looking truck with high miles that has had everything done right.

Chuck, I've helped 4 guys on here get their 80's, so they are around, just gotta look.

Alaska - yes, you are right, and probably because anything over that price is over priced. :princess:

Hey, if ya'll want overpriced trucks, then fine, but if you don't want to hear the opinion then don't ask.

You would also be mcuh better shape ot make a offer if you took it some where for a prepurchase inspection. This will tell you what you need to do. At those miles it may need a 60 service. Which is the Front and rear axle service, all fluids, tune up. This service if you do not do it your self is a $2000. Is this truck a true 40th anv truck? what color is it? does it have the two tone seats, climate control, upgrade stero. I have seen a bunch of 40th's and none have come with lockers. Does it have the mechanisum done on the axles for this? Does it have the serial number on the consel by the shifters for the tranny and transmission. Later robbie

A mint 40th with lockers and v low miles is a pretty rare bird. Is it the sage colour too? Provided it checks out you would have a nice vehicle. I agree with Robbie though, check the door number to confirm it has lockers and have the vehicle checked out to see it is not too good to be true. There has been at least one fraud on a fake locker switch. For that kind of dough, you may as well pay for a full toyota dealer inspection and ask the dealer to pull the as equipped build sheet on the truck for you so you can confirm it was originally equipped as it is today.

Thanks for all the advice guys. The truck was white and had the 40th carpets and badges. All the lockers worked and I can only guess they were toyota lockers because of the electrical igniition I heard in the cabin similar to the other truck I tested. Either way the guy didn't take my offer didn't seem like he was budging past 18500, said he wanted to see what the market would give him. That truck is going to end up with some one who doesn't even drive on the grass!
