Just how freakin' thick are front axle tubes?

I'm working on my cut and turn and the groove I have created where the knuckle inserts into the tube seems to be plenty deep enough (maybe too deep) and I can sort of see in the wall of the groove a parting line like thats where the insert stops and the tube starts- like maybe 1/4" deep. So I heat the bejeezus out of the tube where the end inserts into it, use a 6 foot long cheater bar and nothing happens... I'm following the writeup that Woody has on the tech page. Possibly therein lies the problem. ;) Just kidding Woody. Maybe I need more fire, and I know I need a larger pipe vise or bench vise. Sorry, no pictures yet- too annoyed to try to document the situation. Suggestions? Thanks, Luke

too thick for a 6ft cheater. glad i could help! :P

Well thank you Mr. Asshat.:))

Thanks for the heads up Phil. by the way, FedEx thinks they will deliver that MSD box to me tomorrow. Thanks again, Luke

lol im kidding with ya man. anyways try heating up a broader area and use 2 cheater bars. one behind pushing and one pulling. (not sure which way but you get the idea, invite some big buddies over for some beer but before they get to the house use what god gave em)and get to work. you might even try mixing a small part helium to get that bad boy real hot. i have seen the cutaway on a LC axle housing and i know it was ungodly thick!

I knew you were kidding, I'm just in a smartass kind of mood tonight- in fact I went back a deleted a post on Pirate 4x4 because I was concerned it was too harsh. No offense taken- I guess I'm just not pushing hard enough- (story of my life) :)

I know this is 4 years too late, but if the cut is made with a small cutting disk (1/16") OR a pipe cutter, then you can use a large chisel that does not touch the bottom of the cut, and whack the chisel into slot where the cut is.

You can measure the thickness of the tube by measuring inside the diff case (at least on a FJ60), since the tube is made of 2 welded halves. It is .250 on a fj60.

I did not need heat but I used my old course spline burf's like a slide hammer it worked good but only if you are replacing the knuckle baring races.
