Just installed the center diff switch yesterday, so I could lock the center diff in high range. Curious about the 7 pin mod, I popped off the kick panel and decided to do it. What a kick! Thank you Cdan and anyone I'm forgetting for figuring this out and making it available to us. That is incredibly slick and took all of 15 minutes - most of which is unscrewing and then putting the trim back on.

I now have full manual control of all my diffs, which greatly increases the flexibility of the locker system on this beast.

Really, really a great and simple mod. I can't stop staring at that cool "center differential lock" switch on the dash!

BTW - any caveats on what speeds to engage/disengage? Since this was not a stock function, it's not on the operating instructions for the FZJs.

You know this weekend I was wondering the exact same thing. I was cruising a light trail in low range but had the diff unlocked (very hard and dry surface). The trail was getting rough up ahead and I decided to lock the center diff probably doing about 5 mph.

Not really knowing how the center diff worked I was wondering if this could cause any damage????

I've "shifted on the fly" at 30-40mph before, snowy road, just let off the gas and coasted for a second, hit the button. Fastest I've driven with the center locked is probably 50-55mph, but I know others have gone faster. I've unlocked it going 50mph before, I guess I'm not too worried about it..

It's just like shifting on the fly.

The C-diff lock switch with Pin 7 mod should be at the top of every new cruiser owners list of things to do.

It's so easy, and so cheap to do, that I can't thinik of any reason NOT to do it.

Doug,

One caveat to the CDL switch w/pin 7 mod is if you have the CDL engaged and drive over 45mph IIRC, your ABS will remain disabled when you deactivate the CDL switch. To enable ABS again, you will have to stop, turn off the ignition and restart. ABS will then be enabled...

Thanks. Wasn't sure since factory center diff locking is accomplished at a dead stop when you go into low range. Marty - thanks for the tip on the ABS.

I have not heard that. I'll have to try it out.

"To disable ABS you will need to drive in a straight line for at least 200 meters at a speed over 70 kph with the Diff lock on, then turn off the centre diff lock and the ABS light will remain on. Presto ... no more ABS. To reactivate ABS you will need to stop, turn the ignition off and restart the truck. "

From (http://www.lcool.org/technical/80_series/80_series_technical.html). Damn good reading if you aren't familiar with it.

edit> this does not require any pin-7 mod

It is actually about 33 mph where the ABS stays disabled on my 94.

Thanks Mike. That is the article (ABS - How to disable it) that I couldn't recall. ABS will remain disabled in my '97 travelling at speeds around 38mph...

I can think of one reason not to, it's electrical! I almost burned my 80 down just hooking up the hellas. :flipoff2:
