The Supra is a de-tuned Z4 but at ~$20k less. BMW offers a 4-cyl version which is a similar price to the Supra, but unless you're just itching for a cheap convertible, why? If you're cross-shopping the Supra against the 4cyl Z4, unless you're dying for the BMW nameplate or want a convertible the Supra is the clear winner IMO. Conversely if you're cross-shopping the Supra against the BMW I6 version, the Supra is still the clear winner for cost/performance given the cost and virtually identical 0-60 and 1/4 mile times

Honestly there aren't a lot of new sports cars out there under $60k. What else competes at that price? Maybe a C8 'Vette?
Agreed. Don't see a better sports car until you at least go $20k higher in price, and for my money at least double in price for the preferred Porsche 911. Corvettes will always be a special outlier in performance per dollar, pretty incredible.

Keep in mind, for 2021 the Supra is no longer "de-tuned" (a new exhaust manifold and different compression ratios) and has an extra 47hp, and now soundly beats the Z4 for less money. I think BMW and Toyota might have had an agreement to let the Z4 be more powerful for just the introductory year.

2013 Porsche Cayenne I have a one of a kind 6spd manual transmission.

I have a very hard time leaving anything in stock trim. Gasoline is one of the cheapest forms of entertainment.

Here's a shot of the 67 Camaro

I saw a video a qhile back where the Toyotaclearly bested the z4 at speed down the stretch...so they did manage to sneak some power in there like you say. :)

Not so much power as power-to-weight, I think. The Z4 is heavier.

As Colin Chapman said, "Simplify, then add lightness"

Since they were launched, the Supra has always edge out the Z4. Various comparison videos show this. When people started to dyno, they realized that it produces more hp than the specs lead to belive.

For similar money, I picked up a 2020 GT350 Heritage Package. Naturally aspirated flat plane crank V8 and 6spd manual. Last of a dying breed

Ya... twas a sloppy use of “power” ...but really just meant that its apparently no slouch compared to the z4. ;)

Love it so far! Really quick, especially for the money. Solid handling and acceleration, sounds great, and nice creature comforts and luxury appointments. Really fun car to drive, and it's a looker for sure. It can be tricky to get in and out for some people, and visibility is somewhat decent. I see it as a smart move for Toyota, the "BMW" criticism is misplaced - all the things BMW contributed to it really make it what it is. It's more than worthy of the Supra badge IMO.

Two of the most iconic Toyota nameplates:

There isn't so much to the BMW haters but for Toyota purists. There is very little Toyota in that vehicle but it is fun to drive *under warranty* of course.

I've got a MKIV or two as well. Used to host and own mkiv.com as well - great memories and people.
Nice. Only thing better than one MKIV is two. Post up some pics please. Also remember your site from back in the day for useful tech. Great people for sure. There’s about 50 around the greater Denver area that still get together on occasion.
