Drew from Iowa, here. I had a friend of mine buy a FZJ80 for me in Phoenix, because, frankly, all the Cruisers up here are rust buckets and overpriced.

I fly out there the day after tomorrow and will be around until around the end of January.

Anyone have a suggestion for a nice place to take it (gently) off road? I'd be okay with just about any kind of non tarmac surface, just to break it in and to let my friend have some fun as reward for her efforts to buy it at a decent price.

I'd be cool with a description with a route or GPS coordinates.

Thanks!

Congrats! I recall seeing that one for sale. What are the black thingies on the hood?

very scenic is AZ 88 - also known as Apache Trail: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_Trail - very doable in a stock vehicle and lots of things to see/visit along the way - definitely check out Tonto National Monument - another link: http://www.arizona-leisure.com/apache-trail.html - classic Arizona sights and landscape

for a shorter trip closer to town, I recommend Four Peaks Road = FR143- http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=353818 - the backside is not so good when wet or snowy

Sedona is nice, albeit quite a bit touristy - for more authentic feel, I would get off the I-17 highway at Bumble Bee and go up into the hills you see on the left side of the highway - http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/az/bumblebee.html - http://seethesouthwest.com/331/the-road-to-crown-king/ - and make sure you see the Cleator Yacht Club http://www.cleatorbarandyachtclub.com/gallery/cleator-bar/ :hillbilly:

what part of town will you be staying in? For reference, it can easily take over an hour to get from one side of town to the other, so suggesting east-side routes around Florence when you're staying in Peoria could add 1-1.5 hours each way to your trip. Anyway, congrats on the purchase, and you're coming at a great time to see the desert!
