Jerry, I'll drop off the spindle nut socket Sunday, probably late morning/early afternoon if you're around? I don't have a fish scale though.

Jerry,
That sounds similar to how I did my "lock open" mechanism. Let me see if I can find a pic - if not I'll take one tomorrow when we get home. Works well, but my plunger is too light duty I think to use for locking it closed.

 R

Thanks guys. I'll be plugging and chugging in the garage today again. Lots of work to still go, got to get the rear broken down, continue to clean up the front and get another batch of brew cooked up to ferment in the basement. Today's batch is a traditional german bock, the double IPA is almost ready to dry hop for a week then bottle. I'm hoping to have both batches ready for the Feb Meet & Greet...

So far it looks like the big shindig on your rig is under control, Garner is there for some tube bending...
Still got room for one more project in the driveway?

Im down for a little wrenching that day. Heck I wish I was closer and would mosey on over today.

Not sure if I'd agree, I'm concerned for manpower but I'm always a bit anxious when I'm tackling something new to me. It all "seems" straight forward but as soon as I assume I know what's going on, karma kicks be back into reality.

What do you have in mind?

Of course, it all depends on the weather. In the event of rain, I only have one 10X10 ez-up.

I spent the morning doing more clean up of the front knuckles/birfs and dropped the 3rds off @ ECGS for re-gearing to 4.88's. I had hoped to go down to Darin's and watch/learn from him but time prevents such a luxury.

I've still got to get the rear broken down further, which brings up my next need...the special tool for the rear axle lock nut. Has anyone made one or have the OEM unit? I will need to acquire one to finish the rear...

Got the call from ECGS, 24 hr turnaround, not bad.

Picked them up to take home, finished cleaning up the front today. I'll drill/weld the Landtank brackets tomorrow and give the front a coat of paint. Hope to get the front finished before the weekend so I can focus on the rear Sat/Sun.

Gave all the related nuts/bolts/thread a blast of PB over the weekend, I'll hit them again in the morning...

Jerry have you bought, or are you planning to make, the actual tire mount piece with the wheel studs? If you bought it, where did you get it?

Great, I was just looking at them. Trying to make a list of parts.
Going to go with:
Destaco 341R clamps (2)
Pins from mcmaster carr: (2)
McMaster-Carr

Do you have extra delrin/plastic material you're using for the ramps?

The style I'm going for is pretty much like the Slee swingouts. Tire on one side, hi-lift mount if possible. Ladder on one side, with a way to have a removable cooler/jerry can holder.

And I'm more than fine with making this a multi-stage build....

Greg told me you guys had to sleeve the Iron Pig bushings into Luke's bumper to make up the difference in sizing.

I have done nothing toward my swingout, I've been focused on the axles to swap.

I looked at the ideas, over $1k for the tire mount and ladder, wow...

Which side are you planning on having the tire mounted? I like the driver side due to better visibility.

I'm seeing the "base" out of a nice piece of 2 X 3, with some 2 X 2 for the tire mount upright and arm. Or, I could bend a 90 out of the 1.5/0.25" square that wouldn't need any gussets (I'd gusset it at the base) and could be easily tapped to mount the Hi-lift on to.

For the ladder, 1.5" round, same for the cooler/jerry can carrier. Make the carrier removable by using some 1.25" to slide the carrier over, held in place by trailer hitch pins or similar. Drill 1.5" holes into the 2 X 3 base, sleeve it with some 1.5" tubing, slide the 1.25" tubing into the sleeve and slide in the hitch pin. At least, thats one way to do it, if it makes any sense to you.

For plastic, an easy find is a piece of plastic cutting board that is relatively cheap, easy to find and replaceable when necessary.

Just some ideas off the top of my head after a couple Smuttynose IPA's...

I have the front pretty much ready to put back together. Still need to clean up the inside of the axle housing, blow out any debris and flush to make sure its ready for all the fresh parts. Landtank brackets drilled and welded into place.

Pics of the progress...

The pile of parts. These came with the axles when I bought them from Chris King who works at Toyota of Dallas. There were a few pieces I had to get from FA but it was very comprehensive...

The Hellfire knuckles are destined for the non-lockers that will be built with 4.88's and ARB's front and rear. But, that's for another thread down the road, hopefully...

Looks good Jerry, and the ideas for the swingouts sound good to me.

Let me look into some of the stuff I have here, as I've got access to some of the Delrin parts used on the filling lines here.

More updates, bit of a set back...

Being stupid and lazy, I saved the dirty job for this morning...cleaning and breaking down the birfs so I could switch them, getting more life out of them. Now, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I think I can see I have a problem, but you can tell me.

From my inexperienced eye, I'm looking for a new set of birfs. It appears to me, beside the obvious, that they have already been swapped sides with the wear on both sides of the cup and both sides of the stars. Nice chunks missing out of the driver's side. Clearly, I should have spent the time to clean these up before now. I've had them soaking in solvent, thinking it would help make the clean up easier. Yet, if I'd known of this issue, I'd been able to get some replacements coming.

Oh well, now what to do. Go big with Longfields, try the Nitros or other aftermarkets or ???

hmmm hell fire fab knuckles :D:D

Go with longs, or used

Depends on which truck the birfs are going back into IMO. The longs are softer and will wear out much faster in a full-time 4wd driven on the street. The set pictured would be good for a set of trail spares, but if I had the means of picking up another set, I would.

Go with another set of stockers ( low mileage obviously ) or a set of stock replacement aftermarket birfs.

I agree with both of you. These are going on the 80, Brianna uses it as a DD to and from Green Hope (>2 miles) and will only be from mid-Feb to June. The future also holds a chance of a transfer case modification which will make it part time 4wd.

I considered Nitro's but the cost is virtually the same and I'd rather go with a known if I were to go CroMo.

After wading through all the threads, posts and such, from Bobby Long included, it appears that the change made to the Longfields put them toward the top for my choice. I'd rather opt for strength over longevity at this point, even though OEM is a close second. Assuming Bobby's predictions are close (half-life of OEM), that he can rebuild them for $80, Longfields it is. Of course, they are back-ordered, which is a good thing since I'd have to consider faster (expensive) shipping to get them here before Sat.

So, it looks like the axle swap is off the table.

How about if I shift it toward the 45? I'd love to get the bed and cab off the frame. It will be dirtier, more frustrating but a HUGE help in getting it closer to being done.

Brian is still on the agenda and I'd love to have the 45 dismantled so I can get it to the sandblaster.

Hope this is still good for everyone, sorry for the change of agenda but, sh!t happens, right?
