HAMOM at the Davis household in Cary NC.
PM Jerry (Mtbcoach) for directions if coming.

I believe that the plan is for jerry to swap axles on his Cruiser and there should be room for 2 more rigs for work.

January 21st

Time to be announced.

I'll crack the doors ~8:30a and have the coffee machine at the ready. I'll provide lunch, beverages and have Brianna make some of her baked goods for snacks.

Yes, I'm hoping to swap the e-lockers I've had on the garage floor for over a year onto the 80. I'm hoping to get the 3rd out of the e-lockers tomorrow and sent out for re-gearing, then rebuild the knuckles and other PM on the free float rear. My plan is to have all that work done prior to the 21st so all we have to do is remove the existing non-lockers and install the e-lockers. I have the ECU/wiring harness and switch but won't plan on doing that unless everything happens so fast, we have time for that also.

I've got plenty of steel (1.5/.120", 1.75/.120" round, 1.5/.250", 2/.120" square and some 2x3/.120" rectangle) for those thinking of making a swingout (Brian?), tubing bender will be open for operation, MIG/TIG welder and plasma at the disposal for those projects.

The list of those coming:

Brian
Johnny
Ramon
Joe
Sean

I'm there... I will be going to DK the week before, but will come home Friday.

Have you bent anything up for yours yet?
I've got some ideas...
Need to order the latches and the tire mount...

EDIT, just read this again. Do you want a hand pulling the axles apart or doing PM on the FF rear? My Friday night is looking pretty open.

Not for this weekend, but I do want to talk to you about a skidplate and possibly sliders for my 60. I need both badly, especially now that my body is clean.

Have any plate steel kicking around?

Yes, I'll be sure to give all the bolts a regular shot of PB to get them ready for removal.

I've not bent anything up for my personal swingout, yet...

Johnny, I've got home Basketball games the next two fridays, so I won't be home until after 10 or so. I will be tearing them down this weekend, only have the rebuild kit for the front knuckles, need to order the parts for the rear FF.

I've got some 1/4" plate but probably not enough for skids but we can talk, I need to get more since I've burned what I had building the interior tire mounts...

Really want to make this one but I think that is the night i'll be taking my nephew to see monster trucks at time warner.

I would love to help and maybe learn to burn....but.... i also have the parts to rebuild the front axle on my fj 80 , if you have the room and/or time...and maybe put zerks on the ends if anyone has the proper drills, ( I may have what it takes but will have to check, anyone done this before?)

Zerks on the ends of the birfields? That's not a particularly easy thing to do as you need a looooong drill bit and a drill press so you can drill all the way through the shaft. Not sure anyone around here is equipped to do that.

Zerks on the ends of birfs need to be done at a precision machine shop..... no one I know of can do that in their driveway.

Got the 3rd out of the rear locker axle, working on finishing the same for the front today. The gear oil out of both diffs was NASTY, not water contaminated, just very thick, black and sludgy...

Moly grease had been sucked backwards to the diff.... common on 80's doesn't really harm it though

Jerry I can't make it to this due to family obligations but if I send you an EGR gasket can you machine a block off plate from it for me and i'll pick it up at the meet and greet??

I'd do it myself but lack the basic tools needed for that.

Jerry, I think our designs for the swing arms are probably going to be much the same, it may be just the accessory racks on the arms that might be different.

Do you have a latch that you're going with? I've seen tons of Destaco latches, and am trying to figure out which one...

thanx for the replies guys, i figured it was a long shot.. I still hope to help out but may be spending a bit of time at the hospital,(mom in law had a stroke but is doing pretty well...sometimes)

Brian - the more I look at all the options, directions, etc of those latches, the more confused I get with which one to get.

That's why I'm planning on making my own. My idea is to have it spring loaded so that it latches when it is swung closed, then can be locked down with a twist of a cam lock handle. I want to use a piece of plastic/delrin to use as a ramp, have a piece of 1/2" roundstock, surrounded by the spring with a washer on the end to capture the spring. It will slide up the plastic ramp then be pushed down into the hole to latch it. The cam lock handle will pull the rod back up, locking it down for security.

My preference of the "stock" latches is to have it pull both halves together and down against a stop so that they won't rattle, if that makes any sense.

I'd turn the latch upside down, so it was pulling down on a tab on each half of the swinger...

It took way longer than I had planned, but I have both 3rds out and ready to have re-geared. It took longer because I thought I was being smart, making some "rolling axle stands" as seen on one of the shows on Spike TV. Well, their idea sucked so I went with plan B, using some small jackstands I had.

That sucked also since there were too many moving parts, not stable enough such that when I tried to pull the 3rd on the rear axle, it all came crashing down, onto the drain pan, making a HUGE mess. Stupidly thinking I had it figured out, same thing happened with the front. So, I had to come up with something reasonable.

I bent some steel to make a kind of clamp to hold the jackstands to the frame, then using a small ratchet strap to hold the axle down on the jackstands. This works well. Now, I can roll the axle into the work space and tuck the other out of the way.

In any event, the front is totally broken down. I'm going to remove all the lines and give it a once over with a wire wheel and a coat of paint before putting it back together. I've got another set of Landtank brackets I'll affix tomorrow, should be really easy to drill out since I've got tons of clearance with the knuckles and 3rd removed. No need to rent the right angle drill this time.

Once that is done, I'll work on getting the knuckles done with fresh bearings, I've had a set of the TRD brake pads squirelled away to go with cleaned up rotors.

But, I need to find an axle nut socket and fish scale to borrow. I thought I had the socket but can' find it anywhere. Anyone have one local I can borrow?
