Change of plans. The date of the axle rebuild is being moved from 10/22 to 11/5.

We're going to be rebuilding the axle on my father's FJ40 on Saturday, October 22. Anyone who wants to come and join the fun is welcome.

If time allows, we are also going to be installing a soft top on Jeff's FJ40.

I'll be grilling burgers and supplying beer afterwards, and for those who want to hang around we can take the water taxi to Annapolis City Dock and make our way back to my house bar by bar. We can make room for anyone who wants to stay the night.

Date: Saturday, October 22, 2016
Time: 9 a.m.
Where: Annapolis, Maryland
What to bring: A change of clothes if you are going out afterwards, cash for the water taxi

You
Don't forget to ask for and borrow the knuckle alignment tool from @StaleAle at the meeting next week.
Can ask him to borrow it, but he don't have it to give...

It's not going to hurt to align the knuckle but if you are just rebuilding them you should not need to re align them.

I was making the bold assumption based on seeing his 40 in person that the shims on there now are not the same ones from the factory. It probably only adds 45 minutes to the whole job for both sides.

How do you know they aren't original? Are they matchbooks or what?

I have never used that knuckle alignment tool once. Not saying I shouldn't, but so far so good.

If you don't change the knuckles you don't have to use the tool. The y are factory aligned. I had to re-aligned mine going from drums to disks and again going from small stud knuckle to large stud knuckles.
If your dads 40 was not factory discs and is now or you think the PO "F"ed them up. Patrick is right for the time it takes to do it. It's good insurance for not tearing a seal.
Are you going with the Marlin HD axle seal?

I'm not sure if I can make it my wife has a funeral for her bosses dad. I'm not sure she want me to go with her or not.

It was factory discs, and I'm assuming they have never been jacked with. I did get Marlin seals for it. A shame you can't make it, but certainly understandable.

Yeah I was assuming the PO had done some work on them. I didn't think mine had been done previous and used the tool and my shims calculated to way different than I had on them to start. Of course I could have effed up the tool measurement process. o_O But 18 months on I don't see gear oil leaking out of my knuckles so hopefully they're good.

If you use the alignment tool yes use the factory and the ones in the kit.
If you do not use the alignment tool you put the original shine back in.
