Hi everyone,
I've been having a long-term issue with my Land Cruiser J100 1999 4.2 TD AT – the engine has weak performance during acceleration.
When I press the gas pedal all the way down, the engine revs start to jump and it can’t downshift properly.
However, if I press the gas pedal gradually, everything works fine.
I've replaced the air filter, disconnected the air box, installed a new fuel filter, and cleaned the fuel line from the tank, but nothing helped.
There is no MAF sensor.
Thanks for any advice.

Most on this sub will be more familiar with the US spec 4.7 (petro). You might want to post this in the diesel / 24v sub

Is the check engine light on and have you tried to pull the codes from the OBD reader?

yes, I read the OBD and everything is fine and no errors code
From my experience working on 1HDFTEs and loss of power and OBD is not seeing any errors, more often than not it’s the high pressure fuel pump injection assembly. But do not take my word for it, do you due diligence in checking/troubleshooting everything fuel line-related.

Do you think I should clean the injectors with ultrasonic cleaner?

Yes, that’s an effective way to service them. YouTube has a lot of DIY video walkthroughs on how to properly clean diesel injectors as well.

Check the small black hose going to the MAP filter and MAP sensor at back of manifold. Make sure the filter isn't cracked either

From the description in post 1, I'm thinking gearshift. Bad/slow shifting could be the symptom if the ATF level is too low.
My first mistake with an auto was to check the atf level with the engine off, which means a litre or two too little.

so should I check the ATF level with the engine running? cold or should I leave it running for 10 minutes?

The most accurate is at normal operating temperature, the engine idling, gear selector in P (or N).

I checked the oil today, and everything is fine. Do you have any other ideas? I drove the car today and the problem is that when I go uphill, when I give it full throttle, the engine speed doesn't jump that much, but I can hear it struggling and can't downshift.

Will there really be a fault in the pump or in the nozzles?
That is not unlikely. HAve the nozzles or the IP been serviced during the last 300 k km?
There are a couple of cheaper checks to do as well, like the EDU to Spill Valve connection issue, and the blocked catalyser (or particulate filter) issue. You will find forum threads on both issues, either here or on landcruiserclub dot net. And, check how is the turbo doing.

Yota has only 277,000km on it, I haven't done any injector or pump rebuilds. Last year I did a turbo rebuild. Everything worked fine then. Later the car was parked for 3 months and this problem occurred.

Could the torque converter be faulty and causing poor engine performance?

For converter, hava look at the attached TSB. But that fault normally appeared during the first 150 k km, so I expect that your converter was changed years ago. Typical symptoms would be that the converter did not come out of lock-up during deceleration / braking. Doesn't sound like your problem.
