J spring install and bump stop issues (1 Viewer)

One thing with the drop brackets is that the axle no longer travels the same path. It actually starts at the same point vertically as a non lifted truck but as it gets compressed the axle actually move toward the rear so that the bumpstop will hit on the front side of the spring perch.

Because of this any bumpstop used will not contact the axle in the correct spot.

Humm, not exactly. It actually will end up pretty close front to rear as stock since the angle up the arm is at when it hits a two inch dropped bumpstop is about the same as stock. Without droped brackets, and 2" bumpstop drop, the axle will stop further forward than stock.

Your spring perch looks to be bent forward, and your caster looks to be some of the worst ever. I vote you hurry up with the winch bumper, and more than likely will want the Slee control arms, or to add CC bushings.

Is there a bend or crease in the metal of the perch about where the red line is? Like I said, it may just be the angle of the pic, but it looks like that plate is tipped up. I don't know what would bend that, coming down on the axle that hard would hit the bumpstops, which I would think would deform before the plate would bend.

Well, I drew it up in autocad and it showed that when the axle was compressed back to it's original height it was .138" further back, not likely the problem by itself but I'm not sure how out of place the tip of the bumpstop is.

It looks to me that the tower is at a slight angle and extending the bumpstop would push the tip further forward.

I was under the impression that when the caster is off that the truck would handle poorly on the highway. I drove it an additional 300 miles home from when I first discovered the problem and it drove nicely. No worse or better than pre installation. In addition, I had the front end aligned prior to installing the kit and they made no mention of any issues, only that the tow was off a bit.

Now that I'm not in sunny So. Cal and back up in the wet and foggy sticks, I'll have to clear out my other toys from the garage and get this bad boy back on stands and evaluate all that has been suggested. The pics I originally took were for trophy purposes and not for diagnostics, I will surely take better pics on the this go around.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Oh, every newbie has to post a pic of his truck in the condition it was purchased, here ya go...

It can just do that with that type of extension of the bump stop. With the j springs and the spacers like you have only from Slee, the edge of the metal cup would rub the spring under compression. It makes a baaaad sounding noise. I took mine out and went another direction with the bumpstops. Don't let these guys scare you thinking it's been hit or bent or what ever. If you run longer arms, like Slee's, it moves the axle forward just a bit and solves this problem, or you can take out the spacer, and install real Toyota bump stops with a 1 inch extender. The threaded holes are already present in the frame and Cruiserdan will know the bump stops you want. I believe they only came on 93's, but on close examination, it appears to be exactly the same bump stop that came on FJ60s.

I went the Toyota route.

Same here, I bolted up FJ62s which I believe are the same as FJ60s. I did ad a 1/2" spacer to the Drivers side to compensate for the smaller housing size on that side.

I'd like to do this, could you give me a little more info on what to look for. Do I need the whole bump stop setup or just the extension that came on the fj60? I was going to ask on the guys parting out either a 60 or 62. How straight forward is install?

the bumpstops from a 60.62 bolt right to the frame. However they are the same height and you need to add a 1/2" space to the one on the drivers side to make them work. I just got back from a junk yard and the 93 in there has the factory stops which are already different heights from right to left.

Got it, thanks! Now if you wouldn't mind could you go back to the yard, pull them off and send 'em this way:grinpimp:

What did you use for a spacer? I wonder why the difference on the 93...

And run down to FedEx before they close in 30 minutes and ship them to me because I *NEED* them RIGHT NOW! And don't plan on charging me either!

:D

j/k Cool Breeze... a little fun with little Ricky from another thread.
