i have a 89 dxl with a 22re (auto) some where and some how the water and oil mixed, kept over heating so i changed the therm didn't help much as i was using water like crazy. my question is my buddy as a new head gasket kit for his 22r but ordered 2 can the hg for the 22r be used on the 22re ?

Furthermore...I'm sure they are the same...and dude...just call a parts store and ask em if the PN for HGs for the 22R family of engines is the same. And if it's a Fel Pro, they print the engine applications right on the box.

Hell bet that HG would fit a 20R too!

It's best to be sure of where it's leaking before starting a job like this. It's relatively common for the timing chain to wear a hole in the timing cover behind the water pump, causing water/oil mix on those motors.

I believe the head gasket's should be the same for all year's of 22r's and 22re's, but I may be wrong. The pre 85 and 85 plus may have different gasket's, but if his is 85 plus you will be fine.

What he said. A hole in the timing chain cover is very common on older 22re engines. BTDT.
