And our A/C just broke! :( The a/c repairman wont be out for 2 days. It's 114 in the shade. I just talked to my buddy in Death Valley and he said it's only 110 there!! This has to be the hottest it's ever been in the 29 years ive lived here.

I think we'll go check in a hotel tonight or camp out at the office.. i can't take another sleepless night!

My thermometer in my LX has been saying 120+ when I get in after it sits parked for a while. Here's my thermostat in my house Friday when I got home:
9-2-07 001 (Small).webp

Im at the office now in 74 degree a/c. After 3 showers and a bunch of complaining like a baby.. we headed to work. We will camp out at a buddies tonight.

This must be record heat. The cruisers a/c even died on me!!!!!!! What luck eh?

Did it actually die or just shut itself down? Both Reid's and mine have temporarily shut down when we've been wheeling in extreme heat but it always comes back. Funny thing is, my 96 4Runner a/c is way better and never shuts down:confused:

If thats the case, i hope just shut down. Here's what happened.. tell me if this is what happened to you... it was working fine all the way out a 20 min drive down the freeway. Once off the freeway and sitting still at a few lights in 120 degree weather it stopped instantly and blew warm air. Almost as if i ran right out of freon. it was strange. So i was at my destination so i shut her down got back in after prolly 20 mins. Drove down the road and it still didnt work. Then all of a sudden it kicked on cold for a minute but the engine would shake like mad when it did it. I thought the clutch may have been seizing or something and i didnt want to loose a belt. I left it off the whole way home, cause i didnt want it to get damaged.

What do you think?

How does the shut down work? auto pressure relief valve or something?

wish you were here 85 up here on the mtn.

Dave,

Do you have the "temp gage mod"? The A/C shut off to help cool the cooling system. Whenever my truck gets super hot, (temp needle just touching the red) it will shut off for only a few minutes.

It sounds like you may have something different going on. Maybe your compressor took a dump?

Reid

BTW: Just got back from a week in Indio. Everyday was 110°+. Hottest day was 177°. At night, it never got below 95°. It sucked!

I'm no expert on A/C but that definately isn't one of the symptoms I've experienced. When it gets too hot, it just stops blowing cold air. As soon as it cools down or I get on the highway and actually get some air flowing through my radiator, etc. it just starts working again as if nothing was ever wrong.

Went out right now and fired the 80 up. A/C is working just fine again. Pretty amazing these trucks are smart enough to shut down before they fry something in the heat. Does anyone know exactly how this works? Maybe i'll post up in the 80s tech and see if CDAN chimes in.

It sucked![/quote] Well, I live and Indio, you are lucky you get to leave...moments like now are making me and my wife having second thoughts about having moved here......I can't take any more of this heat.....it is oppressive heat that does not allow someone to have a life.....You have things to do outside the house? better get them done before 9AM or wait till sunset......or risk dehydrating and or worse suffering heatstroke....

The AC cut relay is activated if the water temp (W4) switch senses high heat condition. AC cut relay (A14) is located behind computer, right side of dash; it cuts the clutch on the compressor.

Thanks for the explanation. Damn Toyota thought about everything. Is this common on most vehicles?

I feel for you. Even at 9am it was pushing 100°! My In-laws live there. For a week, we did nothing but swim, watch movies, and played games. I don't think I went outside for anything but the pool. The A/C in the house was set for 76°, but it could only get to 82°. It just couldn't get any cooler.

We ventured out one day to visit one of the :princess: old friends, my thermometer in the LC read 145° inside temp and 132° outside (heat coming off the the BLACK PAINT)!

BTW: Hottest day was 117°, not 177° (obviously). :whoops:

Be careful when your AC cuts off in the cruiser. Mine did that last summer and a two days later the top tank on my radiator blew. You may want to go through your cooling system.

After a new radiator, thermostat, fan clutch and all of the belts and hoses that were shredded, mine doesn't cut off even in this heat. Anyway, just a heads up!

OMFG i want to die when it is 35 Deg C here (95 Deg F) at those temp i'd be dead or driving up to Canada....lol

Whew, if that's true, we got bigger problems ;)

Supposed to be nice next weekend though

Curiousity question, not meant to be a wiseass, but what is in Indio that made you move there?

I have done some work out there and everytime we are there, its hot as balls and we all ask each other "Why on earth would people live here"?
