Soooo I'm working to fix an old 93 1fz landcruiser. After some replacments and getting it running I gave it the good old Italian tune up (reves to like 5k) and now it won't start....... whoops

Some info:
- new alternator which fixed all dash lights being on.. might help someone
- new pcv valve (put in to fix vaccume in head + smoking which didn't fix either, rusty exhaust seems to be holding some water.
- rad flush, new thermostat
- gunk in head + oil cap... sat for like 5 years and started like 10 times a year.
- oil flush
- new water pump
- new spark leads
- doing this on a farm so don't have heaps of tools or workspace haha
- oil is still super clean looking after changing it and running for 30 mins at idle.

It was running abit rough at idle and misfiring So I cleaned out idle control (not sure if I messed something up when doing so). Also removed the throttle position sensor which I put back on in the same place but dont know if that messed up too. After that it was running rough again, reved it and it died.

Sooooo.... spark seems good, so thinking it's fuel related. When I turn the key I can't feel the fuel relay switch on all I hear is the sub tank make a click then turn on, idk why its pumping tho switch seems to be off.

Jumped the pins and the cel just flashes no code.

I've worked on cars for awhile but this is the first time I've done a project like this so have a lot to learn!!

If anyone has some advise on what could be good to check to start troubleshooting that would be amazing, spend hours today on various threads but couldn't get it starting :(

IDK, I know Australia is dry perhaps even bone dry in most places, but sitting at low use for so long I would be worried about condensation and water in the fuel tank/system. We have had a "low use" 1994 in the family for the last 8 years but I was able to ensure it ran a few miles weekly plus the odd longer trip throughout the period.

Not certain this helps much, sorry.

Start here. There is a ton of good troubleshooting info in the FSM.
I would check the fuel pump relay and fuel filter if it hasn’t been changed. It’s definitely a labor of love but once you get it going it’s worth it.
Good luck.

Hadn't really thought about fuel quality to much, thanks for the input!

Awesome resource, thanks so much. Think fuel filter is a step in the right direction!

Does it crank?

Does it crank?
Sure does! Was running semi fine for quite awhile... just rough idle/ misfire. No big bang or anything when it stopped after reving it to just kinda dropped revs then stopped and wouldn't start haha when removing oil cap it did nearly stall out but was reading through some threads and some people says that normal as it makes a vaccume leak but new to the whole concept of vacume tbh

When you turn the key to the on position, is the check engine light on?

Totally normal on the oil cap.

Break the problem down and troubleshoot. Start with the big ones, air, fuel, spark. Then follow where that leads. If it cranks but won't start, you are missing at least one of those three things. The FSM is a very useful tool for diagnostics. Throwing parts at it without troubleshooting usually doesn't work.

Legend, I'll save my money for when I'm 100%

Spark is good
Air is good (exhaust is pressurised when cranking, don't have a gauge yet to test but seems alright)
Spark plug had full on it after cranking but maybe just not enough pressure u guess. Thanks for the advise!

There is a technique to counting the flashes. It is under Diagnostic Trouble Codes in the engine section of my 1994 FSM and begins on page EG-218.
Yes, and the on and off alternating with no pauses means the diagnostic jumper is connected with no codes stored.

You youngsters and your starting issues! Doesn't anybody keep a can of Starting Fluid on their shelf anymore? Spray some of that in the intake (remove the air filter so as not to soak it) while cranking. Start and then shut down? Fuel problem. Not start? Electrical problem. By far the easiest way to eliminate exactly 50% of the potential issues in 30 seconds...

With age comes wisdom 🤣 I'll grab a can today

Update:

Went I went out to work on the 80 it turned over with rough idle, was fluctuating between good idle then would go rough. White smoke from exhaust.

Turned off then on and it wouldn't start, after a few cranks and it kind of stuttered then white blew out of the air intake (no loud noises). Oil slightly milky and bubbling from coolant resovour.

Sounds like head gasket to me, fsm was helpful for fuel and pulling apart the vast. Thanks guys, let me know if u have an opinion.
