Like many I'm sure, I have a lot of questionable tools when it comes to the quality department. It's not that I don't like quality, in fact in most aspects of my life I demand it. For carpentry tools I have nothing but the best. Sockets; well that was another matter. So last summer I bought one of those giant Craftsman sets of mechanics tools and thought, "well that is that".

A few weeks ago I saw this nice, like new, Snap On 5 drawer, 26" top chest and picked it up on a whim for about 1/3 of the retail price. I was very impressed. I'm still impressed. Now I use a friend's shop (professional mechanic) often so I've used a lot of Snap On and Mac tools over the years...but I've never owned any.

I'm addicted! I've since bought flexible metric racheting wrenches; 80 tooth technology, industrial finish ratchets; metric deep impact sockets; interchangable head, dead-blow hammers; punches; pry bars; torque wrenches (2); their best timing light; etc. And to top it off, I now lust after their KRL (master) series roll cabs and top boxes. You know, something like a 54" wide model in Snap On red.

Thank God for ebay where you can generally get this stuff for half or less of retail.

I have made a list of the things that "matter": torque wrenches, ratchets, impact sockets, and a few other things and I'm trying to stick to those for Snap On purchases. I tell myself, the Craftsman or SK combination wrenches are just as good so don't bother....but it's hard.

Just wanted to share.

Haha I hear ya as well. I finally bought a big Craftsman set a couple years ago. A ton of sockets and wrenches. I'm happy with them.
The ratchets on the other hand are garbage. I've since picked up six or so Mac ratchets on Ebay for less than half retail like you said.
Now i'm on this freakin Snap-On digital torque wrench infatuation. Bid on one today and lost but figure i'll hold out for an excellent one and pay half the retail.
It never freakin ends.

I won't buy snap-on or mac for retail. That said, those are very nice tools. However, I prefer tool makers such as Proto or Wright, where you can purchase at the local industrial supply store for the right price. Snap-on.... nice stuff... My 3/8 ratchet is a mac, i love it.

Crapsman....

Welcome to the club! I'm a pretty extreme example of this addiction in its advanced stages. I get to load up my service trucks with tools that I've replaced with something "sexier." I also get to buy diagnostic and programming tools that are trade-specific, too.

Let this be a warning to you.... turn back before it's too late! For most guys it starts with a ratchet....... next thing you know, you're losing sleep over eBay auctions.

Ahh, tools. When I went to trade school everything in the Mac catalog was 1/2 for students :) Spent more on tools than I did on school. I also have lots of SK for wrenches, Matco digital Torque wrench. It was hard at the dealer when we had a different tool truck almost every day of the week. And they all gave credit. Was tough to not owe more than I was making some times. Matco, Mac, Snap-on Cornwell. Lots of the generic tool kits were the same and and the air tools re-branded. Actually could "deal" with them on these things since one of the other trucks always had something on promo. Have more money in tools than cruisers now :D
