My son's 2000 LX470 has lost both high and low horns. They just don't work (I know, I couldn't believe it but, there it is). He came home from school last month and when I test drove it, the horn was silent. I checked the fuse, and it was toast, so I replaced it, but it still didn't make noise.
I had the steering wheel off to replace it, so I had it in my mind to run through the circuit while I had the access, but on a lark (I love that expression) I thought I'd test the horns individually, just to be sure it wasn't the simple thing.
I ran test leads to each individually, and lo and behold, neither worked. I assume that whatever caused the failure also cooked the fuse, but that's wishful thinking on my part, as of now. I have yet to check the relay, but it's on my to do list for the weekend.
I have my 80's front end apart for its 30 year maintenance teardown, so he has my horns (I tested them the same way, because I knew they worked, and they passed the test), for the time being. Since the 80's horns work, I assume (again, for now) the relay isn't faulty.
The circuit is stupidly simple, so I'm hopeful it really was the horns that were the root cause:
My question is, has anyone successfully refurbished a failed horn? The new ones are $75(ish) (US price, not the special Dave price) and any used one is going to be just as old. There appears to be a single stud holding the mess together, but I haven't given it any real thought.
These were apparently only used on the 1998-2002 100 series and the 2000-2001 4Runners, so there aren't any "good" used horns to pick from, IMHO.
