My son's 2000 LX470 has lost both high and low horns. They just don't work (I know, I couldn't believe it but, there it is). He came home from school last month and when I test drove it, the horn was silent. I checked the fuse, and it was toast, so I replaced it, but it still didn't make noise.

I had the steering wheel off to replace it, so I had it in my mind to run through the circuit while I had the access, but on a lark (I love that expression) I thought I'd test the horns individually, just to be sure it wasn't the simple thing.

I ran test leads to each individually, and lo and behold, neither worked. I assume that whatever caused the failure also cooked the fuse, but that's wishful thinking on my part, as of now. I have yet to check the relay, but it's on my to do list for the weekend.

I have my 80's front end apart for its 30 year maintenance teardown, so he has my horns (I tested them the same way, because I knew they worked, and they passed the test), for the time being. Since the 80's horns work, I assume (again, for now) the relay isn't faulty.

The circuit is stupidly simple, so I'm hopeful it really was the horns that were the root cause:

My question is, has anyone successfully refurbished a failed horn? The new ones are $75(ish) (US price, not the special Dave price) and any used one is going to be just as old. There appears to be a single stud holding the mess together, but I haven't given it any real thought.

These were apparently only used on the 1998-2002 100 series and the 2000-2001 4Runners, so there aren't any "good" used horns to pick from, IMHO.

I was looking in a junkyard for a 100 series horn when I noticed that a 4th gen 4Runner had the same horns - same connector, mount, and dust/water shield on the end. I only needed one, and $5 later, I had a working horn.

Just watch that you get 'low' and a 'high' note horns and not 2 of the same tone.

As I said above, I'm aware the 4Runners used the same horn. My concern was that they aren't any younger than the ones that failed. If I was on the waiting list for a heart transplant, I'd take an 80 year old's, but this aint that.

Horns don't fail from age, some junkyard ones should still work fine, super easy to test them. Not sure what a special Dave price is, but if you don't want yard ones, you're stuck with new OEM prices or some aftermarket like Hella.

Yeah, that's what I thought, until I had two fail. Admittedly, they're the first (Toyota) horns I've ever seen fail, but I have less experience with 100s than with all the other models.

Dave Stedman at Japan 4x4. The only parts source you'll ever need.

Maybe, but looking at the circuit, I can't think of what it would have been.

Still interested in anyone with horn rebuilding experience. It's too cold to be outside, so today might be an autopsy day.

I see a lot of folks installing the "Premium" Toyota horns on their Toyotas. Not sure if it is any better than what was there originally though. $65/shipped from Amayama.

I recently replaced the horns on my 98 because every time I had to use the horn I was embarrassed at how awful they sounded. Not wanting to spend a ton, I added a pair of Hella Sharptones to a Rock Auto order for $21. I then had to go through the extra effort to make a proper wiring setup to make them work, and they are still a bit higher pitched than it seems a vehicle of this size should have. Output is dramatically improved, however.

In the end - I imagine the Toyota Premium horn would be a better plug and play solution. If you have a u-pick yard close to you, I felt my ‘08 Forester horn had the right tone and output for an LC (and made me feel “bigger” in that little car).

If you can get the circuit sorted, the JDM are much more akin to a large SUV IMO.

The OEM in the LC seems better suited to a Corolla.

Using the JDM people know where I am and stay clear, since it's much louder.

Just for clarity, the LX and LC have different horns. The LC has the round horns, the LX has horn shaped ones.... like the "premium" horn link I posted.

Now we lx owners have something else to gloat about:)

Op, you’ll know if it’s upstream if the 80’s horns you installed also die. If not, you are probably safe with a used horn.
