Really impressive build.

Do you think it makes sense to put some type of drain under the fridge to divert water or moisture outside?

Thanks , im trying

The thing with the fridge is its not frost free so there will be no water build up from the inside only when I turn it off and defrost it . The other part with a gas absorption fridge is it has to be about as level as you can get (no more then 3deg side to side and 6deg front to back)so it works right so I was able to put just a hair of pitch to the out side
The pan I put under it is to keep the water from the outside from getting onto the wood . The vents are pretty water resistant but will let some water in and the bottom one has to be level or a hair under the bottom of the opening to keep any propane that may leak or CO from getting into the trailer . This is part of the reason the box needs to be tight and sealed at the face with no air gap around to keep the CO and a poss propane leak out and let the air flow up and across the coils like a chimney and not get trapped above the unit .

Makes sense. I don't see much water getting in there unless you are towing the trailer in a rain storm. Have you considered making a cover for the vent while you are towing?

Also, I don't recall if you were going to install a CO2 detector/alarm. Have you done any research on which one is the best?

2/27/10 more pixs

The flashing made up is overkill and what ever may get in now wont be a problem .
The CO/LP detector im using is what was in the pop up and just getting moved over as for which one is best, I dont know

Now on to more stuff thats been done

I also had to test out the microwave (see popcorn bag in pix #3 ;) )as it was a $25 loss leader at HomeDepot around Christmas I figured before I finished fitting it in I better try it and hoping it works and not finding out its DOA

I did a little research on my own question re: carbon monoxide detectors.

Cliff Notes on attached links:

1. You should have either a carbon monoxide detector or combo CM/smoke detector that is less than five years old.

2. You should also have a propane gas detector. These get mounted close to the floor.

3. You should have a fire extinguisher.

They may be overkill but the small space of a camper combined with deadly gases seems to warrant $100? spent on an early warning system with the latest technology.

Here are the links:

Kidde seemed to get good reviews. Don't know about the propane detector.

Thanks for the heads up

I got the fire extinguisher already with the inset wall mount . It will be mounted next to the door for easy inside and outside access . For the CO/smoke detector I'm picking up a regular household batt powered unit . The propane detector (I thought it was a CO unit too but its not ) has been checked per the manual to make sure it works to spec . That needs to be mounted no more then 12" off the floor and will be mounted right next to the fridge/under the stove and propane wall light .

So far Ive found that most of the stuff mounted in the Coleman pop up weren't even close to manufacters specs on installation.
I'm all about safety with this project after seeing the mess I pulled out so far from both trailers and will be holding not just my dumb ass but the Cruiser :princess: too

Its my intention to build a teardrop from scratch and I have been ruminating on the self contained heating system. Propane seems to be the answer but the CO2 worries me.

A battery powered detector is definitely on the list.

I am considering a Little Buddy heater but prefer something that I can vent.

didnt get alot of big stuff done this weekend .
I cut some 2x3s for the roof supports where the roof is flat . The 5 across the top now taper from the middle down to the the edges about a 1 1/2" on each side . Mounted the next sheet for the roof . Framed in and then cut the opening for the roof vent . Its now in the right spot as the old one was added after the trailer was built and they put it in the next roof bay over from where the fame was already in the roof and leaked .
It was nice today (sunny and in the 50s )so I put my 1st coat of spar on 2 more roof sheets and the front panel out in the driveway . Since that stuff takes a while to dry I started on the 110V wiring . Got most of the outlets done and wired . Its starting to get nice so I got to get moving on this :steer:

nice build ya got goin here.. ive been watching from the start and i usually just keep quiet but im jumpin in cuz of the CO. detector thing .. i have worked in the heating and air conditioning biz for 30 yrs now and CO detectors have been a pain in my a## for a long time... as an inspector for the gas utility i have had to answer many many " hot calls" where a customers co detector has gone off..too many false alarms.. too many cheap detectors, now dont get me wrong cuz they have saved many many lives as well.. dont ask me what is the best kind but i know wich ones are the worst... the kidde models are pretty good.. for the trailer you may want to look at this one.

Kidde, Residential & Commercial - Propane, Natural Gas & CO Alarm

cuz its got the propane detector built in.. most false alarms are caused by age, poor location, dirt /dust. cleaning products, humidity... not nessacarily in that order ..

so the beef i got is .at one time, as the utility we used to evacuate homes at 35 ppm.. that has changed the legal exposure rate fo CO over an 8 hour period is 35 ppm yet most CO detectors will not alarm till 100 ppm..

i have 2 different kidde co detectors here models 900-0215 and a 9c05 both brand new their alarm rates are the same and are the following .

at 70 ppm the alarm will sound within 60 to 240 mins
at 150 ppm .............. within...... 10 to 50 mins
at 400 ppm .............. within ...... 4 to 15 mins

it would be much easier if i could just copy and paste but
the model with the gas dectector says.
the alarm will sound before 25% of the lower explosive level is reached
the unit will detect co as a priority over gas,
bla bla bla....

ok so..... in such a small area i would be curious to see how many times these things would alarm in a weekend of camping if you cook inside its prolly gonna go off.. if your cleaning up spaying cleaners and crap it might go off
i know glade air freshners set them off all the time..

ok so.... i dont know .. i say its a good idea .. and you should have one

i know that last trip out i took my CO detector .. its a TPI unit
in my serengetti roof vent open 2 windows open a crack..
first night i ran a colman cat heater 1 hour before bed i had 11 ppm .. the next night a colman lantern 1 hour was liike 17 ppm.
i can live with that but i wouldnt let em run any longer than that...

oh yeah this from kidde web site ..

50 ppm ... max exposure rate for 8 hour period . i gotta look into that, im not sure this is correct.

200 ppm ...slight headache, fatigue , dizziness 2-3 hours

400 ppm... forntal headache life threatining after 2-3 hrs

800 ppm... dizziness nausea convulsions 45 mins, death 2-3 hrs

1600 ppm .. headache dizziness and nausea 20 mins death
death within 1 hr

3200 ppm headache dizziness nausea 5 -10 mins.
death 20- 30 mins.

6400 ppm headache dizziness nausea 1-2 mins
death 10 -15 mins

12,400 ppm death 1 - 2 mins....

and this is based on healthy adults children and elderly would be more at risk...

what do you do with a new BJ70 frame, and a old pop up and its almost 60deg out :hhmm: ?
You use them as a drying table

where did you pick up that popup?

I got it from a place in philly that gets them thru insurance claims .
If you look up rebuildables and have a know someone in the body repair they can most likely find one a a local insurance auction.

i have looked up rebuildables, and the only person's i know in body work are in SD.
what are you going to do with the rest of that one you have?

I was going to see if I can part it out as the ABS plastic roof and rear panel is easy to break and hard to come by . The canvas is also a big item as spring is comming around and people will be opening up there pop ups and finding rodent damage .

, You interested in it ?
