Is this an LSD or a locker?

This in my 79. Im thinking of swapping it into my 76 because its third member is in need of a rebuild. From searching around I think its an LSD which appear to be almost worthless off road but Im not sure. If it is an LSD I think Ill rebuild my third on the 76 and drop in an aussie. Can someone identify this?
Thanks
Jeff

Yep, it is a Limited Slip Differential, LSD, and they cannot, and will not ever perform like a locker. Their name says it all, limit slip, which is not a locker, and yes, in most applications off road where you will have a tire off the ground, they will prove to be worthless, since it will allow power to go to the wheel without traction and leave the other not turning.

If you want the performance of a locking differential, then you need to purchase and install a locker.

LSD

I have used Auburn LSDs in 3 different trucks and for mild off road - mud and snow they work fine For serious off road get locked. ARB is my favorite.

Its an auburn LSD. I have one and it works great for general 4x4ing. If you plan on serious off road get it fully locked. Your 3rd member looks good, BTW. Fill it with heavy duty lucas oil and drive it.

I thought an open diff would do this and a LSD would do the opposite and provide power to the wheel that was still on the ground?

Install one in your truck, and get it into that exact scenario and let me know how it works for you....

I had one in the front of my 78 if my tire left the ground it would spin freely and the second it hit the ground engage the locker and there went another Birf, worked great besides that though.

LSD's SUCK!! Remove it, sell it, whatever, get an ARB if you see on and offroad in your future. If you are an offroad only guy, any real locker will do.

Thanks everyone. After reading the posts I went to Auburn's web site and as it turns out their symbol is stamped on the carrier so that is what I have.

Anyway I swapped the thirds from the now donor 79 to my operable 76. I agree with all of you about lockers being the best choice but to save some money Im going to have to deal with it. The other third was beyond repair. The center pin was all scarred up from the spiders dancing around probably needed a new ring and pinion also....tons of backlash and lateral pinion movement among other things.

This leaves me with another question...if I wanted to install an Aussie locker later would I be able to install it in Auburn's carrier or would I need to rebuild a Toyota dif.?
Thanks again
Jeff
