Is the rear door design safe?

I've got two small kids (6 and 8) who will be spending a fair amount of time in the FJ (if I go that route). I've read that the rear doors can't be opened unless the front are opened first. Does this make riding in the back seat unsafe? (I'm thinking an accident where the driver may be disabled)

Surely that could be modified with a wiring diagram.

I haven't seen the truck but I think it's more of a physical design thing than an electrical issue. I think one door closes on top of the other like the side doors of many large passenger or cargo vans.

No, the doors and latching mechanisms are entirely mechanical.

Just as dangerous as any modern extracab pickup or two door vehicle with back seats. Not a real issue IMHO.

I would not worry...Honda Element has this design. In addition, most long cab trucks have this design.

The only potential problem is the side crash safety. Honda Element failed miserably in the IIHS side crash test. Suicide doors can be a problem if not design right because of lack of a solid B-pillar.

IMHO, side curtain airbags are a MUST in any vehicle with suicide doors.
 
The doors are of the same design as the access cab Tundra but with only one door handle on the inside. The front has to open for the back door to open.
