Is that a vibration? I wonder …..

I had a 4 man golf scramble to attend near Lake of the Ozarks. I hadn’t taken our 80 on a road trip, without the kids, since we have owned it. I thought this would be a good opportunity to hear its shakes rattles and noises before we head to Yellowstone at the end of June.
I left Odessa heading east on I-70. No radio, all windows up, listening for sounds. I got to about 65 MPH and everything was rolling just fine. As I worked up to 70 a vibration developed. Nothing major. Just enough to make my mind race. I relaxed the throttle. The vibration subsided. I worked the speed back up to 75 this time and the vibration picked back up at 70 and continued to 75 mph.
This cycle continued to Boonville, Hwy 5 exit. I pulled into a parking lot, crawled under the 80 to make sure the U-joints and drive shafts were tight. All was well there. I checked the tire pressures and they were all between 38 and 40 psi. I did notice some uneven tire wear though.

I took a day off work to get some time in with the family. I also took the 80 to a tire shop to get the tires balanced. They did confirm that the tires were warn, cupping, the cause of the vibration. They said to balance them now could help but would eventually need to be replaced, balanced and aligned. They also pointed out the front brake pads needed changing and the front tires have a wobble indicating axle bearing or trunion bearings needed replaced.
What to do?
The 80 is very seldom used. I think we have put about 5,000 miles on it over the past year and three months. However, we are planning a family trip to Yellowstone at the end of June. With a road trip like that I do have some concerns. The biggest concern is the brakes, then the bearings, followed by the tires. Each of those items do affect the other in some way shape or form.
For those that know me, if I tear into something to do maintenance and it can be improved, might as well do it. With that in mind;
1. Are there any improvements that can be made to the break system of a 1997 LC? I have heard of using break stuff from a 100 series LC but I don’t recall enough details to start buying parts.
2. Is there a preferred outer front axle rebuild kit? On 40 axles there is a preferred inner axle seal I got when I rebuilt my axles. I’m sure there are items of the same for the 80 axles.
3. Tires? I was thinking a 285 75 r16. Maybe going with Tread Wright, if time allows.

You have about a dozen questions there.

If you are going to be at the farm this weekend, I will tell you what I know.

Got all my 80 axle rebuild kits from Kurt at cruiseroutfitters. Very happy. Komo bearings I believe is what I go with.

If you still have vibrations after tires, pull the front driveshaft and see if it continues.

1.yes, you can use 100 series pads, but need to resurface or replace rotor. you have to pull outer axle hub to get to rotor, so do with your knucke rebuild.
2, stay stock --marlins on 80 series have been known to leak.
3. great size. Looks great on rig.

1) The 80 series pads actually work very well as long as everything else is in good working order. I have Akebono pads on mine but I believe the factory pads are Denso ceramics. Wouldn't waste my time or money on slotted rotors or anything like that.
2) cruiseroutfitters has a very comprehensive kit, when its in stock. I would get that kit, minus the wheel bearings. If your wheel bearings need replaced your local Autozone will carry them, they are made by Timken. Both Koyo and Timken manufactured the factory bearings for these vehicles.
3) 285's look sweet on stock height rigs. I just put a set of Duratracs on my 94 and it looks pretty tough. Probably performs well to boot.

Thank you both for the incite. If the rotors need replaced, should I go back to stock, or look for an aftermarket something? If aftermarket, any recommendations?

Going to take the 80 by Eric Jobe's Friday for a second opinion on rebuilding the front axle.

Tires (5) are ordered. I went with 285 75r16 (E) Guard Dog from Tread Wright. They should be here in a few weeks. This will give me some time to work breaks and front axle (maybe).

I have the mud flaps and running boards on the 80 still. Will I have any issues with tire rub?

I would just go with stock rotors. Some people do powerslot or powerslit or whatever they are. I have stock rotors on both my rigs, ones wearing 285's and the other is wearing 315's. With the ABS turned off they will both lock up there tires under full braking. I have never thought I needed better brakes, maybe if I was towing in the mountains.

Your mud flaps and running boards won't be an issue, they won't rub your tires. However, your truck will look less cool with those running boards on. When you take the boards off of these trucks it looks like you did a 2 inch lift.

That's a jab in the ribs. I have to keep them on for now. they make life easier for Wife and kids, ages 7 and 4.

This should be pretty straight forward, pending second opinion on bearings.

Ordered break pads, front and rear along with inner wheel seals today. Second opinion was that the wheel bearing are still good and need to be repacked. Yahoo. Save me some $$$$$ (for now). I’ll be working on the 80 when the parts get here, sometime this week. I’m looking forward to getting tires, mounted, balanced and put on. Great opportunity for a before and after.

Did you order the grease? I found that Moly was pricey, found my stash on ebay... damaged case box was cheaper than 5 tubes elsewhere.

I'd like some more info on this, I have two trucks that are long overdo for both front and rear axle jobs.

I will look up the brand that I bought so you can do an ebay search and watch for it.

I think the two top rated were CAT and Mobil,

I did find it - 8 tubes - $3 each? I don't know how to PM in this new site. I will use whatever you don't need possibly in the future.

Mmmmmmm. I'll have to get back to ya on that one. I didn't pack them myself. 4 of the 5 tires balanced our fine. The 5th was 16.5 out. I contacted Tread Wright. "You will have to make a warrantee claim."
I took the 80 down to Bennett Springs over mother's day. Yes, my wife likes to fish and did out fish me. We got about 15.5 MPG. Previously getting around 18, IIRC. Is this typical?
