Is TDC a compression stroke?

You’ve probably seen the warnings on mud. Make certain your dissy is fully seated or it won’t turn your oil pump.

Here’s how I remember the firing order

just right

When #1 is on compression stroke, #6 is on opposite exhaust stroke.

With valve cover removed and #1 on compression stroke both of #1’s rockers should be up and not under tension. You can wiggle them. Since #6 is pushing exhaust gas out the exhaust valve rocker near #6 should be pushing down the valve. Try to wiggle it, it will be under tension.

Pretty sure with the dissy cap off the rotor button should point towards the #4 spark plug in the block. Are you sure you are on compression? You need to feel air pressure with thumb, do the TP trick, or watch what your rockers are doing, not just feel for the piston. If you were to install your dissy cap, is the rotor button underneath the #1 spark plug wire on the cap? That’s the key, you can move your wires around to make it work.

What is that? 3?

I’d say yes. I’ll try the TP thing tomorrow. I had already replaced Zvalve Cover, but easy enough to remove.

What is that? 3?

Huh?

That looks off to me... but my eyes are gettin on... you sure I’m wrong there? I could swear 1 was on the other side of the clock...

^^ My thoughts as well, but looks like vacuum pot would hit the oil cooler if oriented correctly.?

not sure...but I could swear the number 1 was right there by the #4 spark plug...is the cap on backwards? maybe it IS me...crap. I'm loosing it...

@KY Longhunter Yeah that's not correct. When setting the dizzy, the rotor should point to #4 plug in the block...which should also be #1 plug wire on the dizzy cap. I have no clue why your cap has the #1 plug where it is.

Is it the correct cap?

Thanks guys.

The cap is just sitting on there loosely. I set it on there thinking the 1 should point towards the #1 cylinder.

So the rotor, which looks like an arrow, should point towards the #4 cylinder on the block, which corresponds to the #1 wire in the Dizzy cap?

Thanks in advance, from self proclaimed novice mechanic.

;) you're on track now.

Correct. To get the rotor ‘arrow thing’ to point where it should, you’ll need to have it pointed toward the #3 cylinder (physically in the block) as you start seating the dizzy. The arrow thing should then rotate counter clockwise as the gears mesh and the dizzy is pressed down.

Also de sure to take a long screw driver to align the oil pump groove to kinda b/w the #3 and #4 cylinder so the base of the dizzy will seat appropriately as it rotates and lowers.

If when seating the dizzy it doesn’t ‘feel’ correct then it likely isn’t seated. Remove and repeat.

Hope this helps.

And make SURE the dist. is seated all the way. It will run if not fully seated, but your oil pump won't be working. On my '75 I can feel two "clicks" when seating the dist.
