is my turbo just noisy?

Hi all

recently completed a T04L install on the 3B

my only concern is how noisy the turbo is? it is a loud whistle.

This is a short video of the noise when driving, it is quite loud in my opinion but a little hard to hear on video.

so to eliminate boost or vacuum leaks i disconnected the intake pipe and turbo outlet pipe and the noise was much louder hence my conclusion that the turbo is making the noise and not a boost leak somewhere.

here is a video of just revving whilst parked.

as you can hear it is louder than a 3B! which is quite an effort.

what do people think? is this normal or excessive?

ja, sounds like a louder than normal turbo, but boy, i wouldnt complain about it, i love that sound!

its a new turbo, right?

haha yes it is cool, but it is a constant whistle on the highway which is a bit annoying...

turbo is second hand with minimal radial shaft play and no axial shaft play.

How's the play on it? Side to side it shouldn't be able to touch the housing. Scraping on the housing around the compressor is a dead give away. There should be zero on/out play. What air filter fo you run? A cone filter can be quite loud. Without being there it's tuff to tell.

Hi gerg, uploaded the following video.

first part of the video is testing radial play.... cant tell if it is touching the housing??? i think it might be... its pretty close if it not touching.

second part after the pliers slip is testing axial play, none that i could feel....

keen to see what people think about the shaft play

It is just hooked up to the stock air filter.

ok, so hard to tell from a vid, but it LOOKS like a lot of play

It does look like a lot of play but it doesn't look like the housing has seen contact. The circular scraping is quite obvious when it does. Do you run a closed or open filter? Like a stock or cone filter? Intake noise can be extremely loud. Do you run a muffler or straight pipe?

The filter is just the stock round air box.

Exhaust is 2.5 inch with just a single hotdog

I can see in my video there is a bit of discolouration around where the blades might touch but no real obvious scrape marks

Another good giveaway for the compressor touching the housing is the tolerance between them opens up as the compressor is worn away. If it ever looks like the wrong compressor was fitted to the turbo because it looks too small be careful..... really one that would be damaged with compressor erosion enough to open up the tolerance would be good for parts as the turbine is most likely also damaged. I don't really see too much going on with your though. Could be a little out of balance. the compressor fins look to be in great condition. Maybe it was rebuilt and not balanced? Its not the end of the world in that case.

Sure wish my 1HD-T would sound like that.

cheers for the replies fellas, helps shed a bit more light on what i should do... for now i think i will keep it on there and see how it goes. however being the common model that it is one popped up not far from me for $150 so i think i will buy it just for the test of swapping it and seeing how it sounds compared to my current one.

G'Day Fella's,

350HJ75, looking good (exhaust system, etc), hope all is OK with the turbo.

Regards
Homer

I can't wait to fire mine up for the 1st time now that the turbo is 80% installed

you will like it mate! i am enjoying mine so far.

picked up a second TD04 today, so will swap it out sometime and report back if it sounds the same or not....

Just to close out this thread I installed the second turbo and it sounds exactly the same...

It must just be a combination of my setup somehow, but I am a little more confident there is no issues.

Cheers
