Howdy ,

I just bought a 89' cruiser prado here in south island , NZ - like the idea of lighter coil sprung series 70 cruiser ! is it worth upgrading the the stock 2LT engine ( B/B turbo , intercooler, exhaust ,etc ) or going for the slighlty larger 3BT engine swap ?

I hear the standard compression ratio in the 2LT's is around 20:1 and the 3BT's is around 17:1, which means the 3BT is more static compression friendly and can possibley handle more power increase . also hear the 3b is really recognised as a strong & reliable little motor. whats with the gossip about 2LT with cracking heads ,etc ?

id try for a 13bt if you swap engines maybee even one of those 5cyl mercedes engines

For a light duty I'd definately look into the KZ series.
Is it worth upgrading the 2LT engine ? I guess it depends on your final goal mainly. There is not that much room for improvements to wild power. If you could find an affordable KZT it might be a lot more cost-effective in the end.

I thought in the scale of Toyota diesel engines the 2L stay at deep ocean .. 3L is a nice option .. but obiusly the 3B is far better ..

But thinking in the 3L is more less the same size and weight as 2L and you can turboed with the same 2L-T turbo with nice results ..

Lots and lots of 2LT problems over here in Canada....I'm sure no different over there. I'd go with something else if you have a choice....upgrade in other words.

dump it

2lt are a hand grenade that had the pin pulled when they rolled out the factory door, trust me im a toyota master tech and these engines are s***e,1kz or 1uz conversion would do nicely!!!!!!

I would get the 1KZ T or save up and get a full size cruiser eg BJ73/74.
Has anyone actually done the 3B or 13BT swap into a LJ70/78?

the probelms i see with the 13BT into a LJ is the front suspension trying to deal with the extra weight. also the 13BT is a taller engine than the 2LTE so there could easily be hood clearence issues since the hoods on thelj are lower and shorter than the HD versions.

my suggestion is drive the thing and enjoy it. all the mods you will be doing will fit the KZ swap in the future so do that as well.
my concernis the KZ is suppose to have a reputation (not as bad as the 2LTE) of cracking heads as well.

if Bernis bush rig engine dies again i am thinking of a buick V6 install...
or it becomse a parts rig...
